What is happening with driving

Just as title tbf.
I followed a driving instructor car back from my fathers today. Only one person in it so assumed it was the instructor. Realise I could be wrong.
Never once did the driver indicate and we ended up in the same village so quite a few junctions. Speeding along 30mph roads.
Is this why so many drivers ignore the Highway Code? They are just never taught it!

"Perhaps the indicator lights were broken"

Yes this could be the case. It’s a common problem, particularly in BMWs.

TinyTinyHamsterBalls · 24/01/2023 20:01

@Keyansier you're a mug.

Maybe a pigeon...no wait, an eagle...flew into his car. Landed on the seat next to him, the driver starts to indiciate but the eagle Misconstrued this as an act of aggression and hits the accelerator with it's talons.

I'm gonna go with the fact that maybe the driving instructor is a shit driver outside of their lessons and was speeding and not indicating of their own accord.

Just one reason - a complete lack of road policing.

People know they can get away with just about anything as long as they don't cause an injury accident.

"Normal" police, don't do any traffic policing anymore, they leave it to the traffic police who are very thin on the ground and only seem interested in "initiatives" rather than stopping normal/low level bad driving.

I disagree with this in a lot of ways. I think cameras have increased compliance with a lot of traffic laws over the last 30 years. Red light jumping, speeding and improper use of bus lanes seems way down as a percentage of drivers anywhere there are cameras compared with when I first passed my test.

On motorways in particular speeding seems down.

I actually did have a pigeon fly into my car during a driving lesson 😀That's when I discovered my instructor had an extreme bird phobia! I still indicated before pulling over, though.

I think if it was an extreme emergency then yes, there can be, IMO. Not to make a habit out of it though of course, and only in emergency circumstances.

It's born out by improved stats in collisions, fatalities and injuries over that time period.

Anecdotally I've driven for about 30 years but had quite a big break until just before the pandemic, when life circumstances dictated I needed a car again. I couldn't believe how well behaved everyone seemed, much less speeding, much less aggressive driving, vehicles generally seeming to be better maintained. I think people being worried about dash cams has wound lots of people down a bit

OneTC · 25/01/2023 12:17

Quoted the wrong post somehow😅

I’d like to see some proof of that because my experience tells me the exact opposite.

Should have been this one

Blossomtoes · 25/01/2023 12:23

Your anecdotal evidence and mine conflict @OneTC. I think it also depends on where you live. I worked in Surrey/Berks for a bit, the standard of driving was much worse there than where I live in Cambridgeshire. The amount of cutting up, pulling out in front of traffic on roundabouts, tailgating, etc has increased exponentially since I passed my test 32 years ago.

Kolakalia · 25/01/2023 12:39

Driving standards are beyond appalling, very noticeable since lockdowns. My house overlooks a roundabout and I used to sit and watch the cars go round with my toddler. Only one in five would bother indicating. It's to the point now when driving around locally where I don't trust anyone's indication or lack of indication because it's so dangerous. People merrily sail around roundabouts doing their own thing without bothering to let others know, don't bother to indicate first exit when it would have allowed cars to enter. It's really selfish and arrogant.

Mamette · 25/01/2023 12:50

The fact is, there are a lot of scenarios that could have taken place.

The fact is? 😂 I love it.

The fact is there are no circumstances under which the requirement to indicate your manoeuvres do not apply.

Extremely urgent hospital appointment, ppffft

What a load of complete bollocks. You would cause a hospital appointment driving like that ffs.

It fucking horrifies me that people ever try to justify speeding. I was nearly killed last year after being t-boned by a speeding driver and my life will never be the same again. There is NEVER any excuse whatsoever for speeding. If you were the one who was hit and nearly killed would you just say oh well it doesn't matter as maybe they had an emergency situation that justifies it? I doubt it very much

NeedTheSeaside · 19/08/2023 09:32

Driving standards are atrocious since the lock downs.

I've been driving since you had to give dinosaurs ROW.

i was just thinking the other day that I needed to check the Highway Code to see if there were new laws on indicating & roundabouts now & if people aren't taught the same way, because it's so bad.

NeedTheSeaside · 19/08/2023 09:33
