AIBU to stop invisalign on Day 2?

Ok I do know that would be hugely unreasonable. And an obscene waste of money.

But I have an 8 month old, sleep is already a rare luxury, and yet, its 1am, she's asleep and here I am awake with the pain of this first tray.

I could cry - not that the pain is that bad (though it is super sore/sensitive/annoying) but that I could be asleep but yet again something else is stopping it. It's overwhelming.

On top of that, I have those bond things stuck to my teeth, and it's incredibly painful even getting the tray in and out and I can't eat with it in, so reducing one of my other favorite things also - eating food!

Please give me tips, advice, success stories before I cry.

Oh wow these results photos are really inspiring!

Op, they are forcing your teeth to move, not sure why the pain is surprising to you?

Can I just ask those who've done it, what's the actual real cost of it? Is the process straight forward?

If your in the uk look at clear correct it's the same as Invisalign but cheaper and most dentists do both.

Oh wow! Those results are amazing!! I'm on a 16 tray plan and that seems so far away now.

I really just hate life right now.

No, I'm in the US - does that change anything?!

Number 1 - you WILL get used to it

Number 2 - in 6 months time you will be very glad you did it (and if you don't do it, you will be kicking yourself)

trieditbuyedit · 24/01/2023 09:12

I had 15 attachments 😩😩😩
Theoretically you could delay the start of course. But those attachments will stay unless (I guess) you are willing to pay more to go back to have them removed then added back on at a later date
Try to stick it out 🤞🏼

FrostyBits · 24/01/2023 09:19

Stick with it! Don't give up. I felt the same (minus the small child) as it felt like they were cutting my mouth to shreds, struggled to get them in and out to eat, etc but the results are amazing. Take some paracetamol (or US equivalent) and get some Iglu to put on the sore bits of your mouth. If my trays had sharp edges I gently filed with a nail file and stuck on orthodontic wax. The first few days are the worst and then you get used to it and it's easy.

AnnPerkins · 24/01/2023 09:21

Your teeth look great @MorrisZapp. What did you have composite bonding for? I will be left with small 'black triangles' when my braces come off and I'm thinking about getting composite bonding or Bioclear (when I've recovered from the £4,500 I paid for the braces😬

Robostripes · 24/01/2023 09:21

I also recommend Anbesol liquid for sore bits. Had some in a drawer from when my DS was teething, it’s magic stuff! You can file the edges of the trays with a nail file too if you get a sharp bit.

Peridot1 · 24/01/2023 09:26

It does get better and as the photos show it’s worth it. I have it too at the moment although i am coming to the end.

@MorrisZapp - your results look great! I will be having some composite bonding too. I haven’t seen any in real life so was wondering how it could look.

AngelinaFibres · 24/01/2023 09:32

I had a put in/ take out brace in the 70s ( I'm 57) and your post has reminded me of the pain of the first few days. I stuck with it because my mum insisted ( I was 11ish at the time). I am so glad I did. My teeth are lovely. My children had fixed braces as teenagers. We used to go straight from the orthodontist to a cafe so they could have a hot chocolate and take some paracetamol for the pain. Eldest son lived on soup and porridge for the first 2 or 3 days until the pain had eased. Stick with it. A smile you are confident in showing is a huge, huge advantage in life. I have a friend who refused to smile in any of her wedding photos because her teeth are so badly crossed over. She has those photos for ever. She looks like she is in a forced marriage.

SaltySeaAir · 24/01/2023 09:32

I'm about to start, not sure if this is helping me or not 😭

I hope it settles really quickly for you - it's reassuring to hear people haven't regretted it!

Any tips? It's the not being able to eat or drink with them in that I can't get my head around? How do I meet a friend for coffee??

Nejnej2 · 24/01/2023 09:32

Agree with everyone above. The first few days were miserable - super uncomfortable and my teeth always felt like needing brushing with the attachments!
Things got easier much quicker with every tray change. I needed a further course as some teeth moved less than expected, so was wearing them for nearly 9 months in total. So pleased with the results though!

@kittensinthekitchen - cost me around £3k, super easy process getting them fitted and it's great to see what they predict your teeth will look like. Only challenges were the initial discomfort and having to change my eating habits (much less snacking because it was too much faff to take trays in and out!)

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 24/01/2023 09:35

This has spurred me on to save hard for mine. I had train tracks as a kid and am too vain for those again, but I want my teeth nice and straight.

Keep on OP. It doesn't last forever.

AngelinaFibres · 24/01/2023 09:38

Mine. I'm far older than you (57) so just a normal brace but they haven't moved since. Stick with it its sooo worth it.

You'll feel better in a few days.

The first week is hell. It's fine after that.

Good luck - my teeth are amazing now!

I knew it would be sore, I was just having a moan in the middle of the night when life got a bit overwhelming and I wasn't expecting it to wake me and keep me awake. I'm so sorry we're not all perfect like you and know 100% how everything will feel and how to react in every situation even those new to us.

Your comment was shitty and unnecessary.

Everyone else - thank you! You're right it will be worth it. Your results are amazing.

Before and after.

AIBU to stop invisalign on Day 2?
SnakeOiler · 24/01/2023 09:41

The first night is the worst. And day 2. Sucking crisps was all I could manage. But it’s never as painful as that ever again

Purpleavocado · 24/01/2023 09:43

Mine was £3k through my dentist. That includes the initial trays plus two lots of additional trays. I will have some bonding on my top teeth at the end, which is £100 per tooth and will probably buy the more expensive retainers to wear at night which I think is £400. The dentist will whiten my teeth at the end, which is free.

I think you have to take them out AND brush before you put it back in! I can't get my head around how it works in real life either. They said invisalign is super common, but I don't ever recall seeing someone take them in or out at a restaurant.

On the plus side I might lose weight because the trauma of taking them out means I'm not going to be snacking on and off through the day though maybe I'll just store up all of my food and eat a lot when they're out.

It gets better, two weeks for me today, so much better all round…..honestly not as much as I was hoping tho, I I wouldn’t notice it at this point, which I still do but no pain/discomfort. That went within first 8 days.

You need to be alternating with ibuprofen and paracetamol in day then I would say codeine a few hrs before you got to bed ibuprofen when you get into bed, that got me through first 5 days, then found could just go stick to para and ibu on a night. Nothing for me now at two week mark.

I do have a tired jaw/heaviness feeling which doesn’t seem to be stopping. And I think it may be because I’m grinding away at it in the night. So booked in to have some Botox in my matesser muscles next week to help me stop doing this.

You will get a little travel case for the aligners. Take them out while you're eating and drinking, then pop to the loo in the cafe or wherever for a quick brush before you put them back in. It's a bit annoying at times but you get used to it quickly.

Jellycats4life · 24/01/2023 10:11

No pain no gain… literally. It is worth it.

Mine haven't been this painful. I've needed paracetamol a few times on day 1/2, just so eating isn't too uncomfortable, but not had to dose on painkillers like this.

I guess it's different for everyone. Some people's teeth need a bit more force to move than others.

sleephelp2022 · 24/01/2023 11:28

Stick with it OP!!! It will be the best thing you ever did. The first tray is always the worst x1000. Your teeth will be agony for a few days but that will go. The pain becomes less after the 1st tray and the longer you go, the less painful it gets. I was getting hardly any pain after the first 3 trays.

ImBlueDab · 24/01/2023 11:38

@MorrisZapp wow that looks amazing, how long in total did it take before you didn't wear them during the day?

Gagagardener · 24/01/2023 11:38

I had top and bottom teeth realigned about 12 years ago. Lower front teeth are now wired into place (a retainer wire has been glued to them, inside, so invisible). They are fine. BUT my top teeth have slid back to where they were; I was not warned that this would happen if I entirely ceased to wear the plastic trays. My dentist did not warn about this. It probably didn't help that I changed dentist after treatment completed. GET VERY CLEAR GUIDANCE ABOUT WHAT TO DO AFTERWARDS.
