To ask if you can just go to church?

This might seem like a ridiculous question. But can you just attend a typical Sunday church service? Would it be unusual? Is there anything I should know in advance? If it was a Cathedral can I just listen to the service and then sneak out? I'm just curious. I'd like to go but have no idea how.

Has anyone converted to a religion - how did that happen (if you are happy to share of course, and thank you if you do)

Yes you can. God's door is open to everyone and anyone.

Why will it be cold and boring ?

Indeed Confused
Stupid comment.

LastOfTheChristmasWine · 23/01/2023 19:37

I think they're quite keen to get people in.

My dog walking adventures took me past a fairly famous local church that I'd never been to, so I stuck my head in the door for a quick look at the decor (I'm not a Christian, but I can appreciate architecture like the rest of us). They were so keen to get me to go in that even the muddy dog I had in tow didn't seem to phase them. I declined the kind invite, on the grounds that leaving muddy pawprints would have been antisocial.

Do they still do collection plates at some services? As a terrible heathen I remember being caught unprepared by that!

Yes, but a lot of people give online or through mobile so it doesn't look at all odd to just pass the bag/plate on to the next person without putting anything in. Not that we'd even look, but speaking as someone who takes up the collection.

Babdoc · 23/01/2023 19:45

Amused at the “cold and boring” comment by a PP. Our church is one of the ‘warm hubs’ providing a safe heated space for pensioners and young families daily during the week, along with tea, coffee, and facilities to heat up food. It’s our response to the winter crisis in people’s utility bills.
OP, churches are not just buildings - they are a community of people who try to offer Christ’s love to everyone who needs or wants it. You will be welcomed whichever denomination you choose.

Justalittlebitduckling · 23/01/2023 20:02

Absolutely! Check the times on the website. Arrive five minutes before it starts. If you don’t fancy chatting afterwards, just leave. Cathedrals are typically more impersonal than small rural churches so won’t necessarily expect you to chat afterwards unless you want to.

VestaTilley · 23/01/2023 20:21

Of course you can just go. Some asked you to book a space when Covid distancing was a thing, but now it’s just turn up. Check service times in advance.

The fine thing is to be there on time and stay for the whole service, putting your mobile phone on silent. If communion or a blessing is offered you don’t have to go up for that if you don’t want to; communion is generally only for those confirmed in to the church (if you are interested your Priest can explain what this means).

Everyone is welcome at church - but there are lots of different types: more traditional services, more modern styles, more formal or more relaxed. Keep trying out different ones until you find one you like. It’s a great way to meet like minded people and find answers to some big questions.

Exactly.

The overwhelming majority of warm spaces in my City are being provided by Churches.

Of course you can. They don't give you a barcode when you get baptised.

Hahaha that was hilarious

mathanxiety · 24/01/2023 00:21

@orbitalcrisis

Personally, I prefer not to be approached and glad handled by a greeter or usher if I go to a church I haven't been to before. I also hate being 'helped' in shoe shops, etc. I realise I may well be a curmudgeon, but I have a feeling I'm not the only one who would prefer to be left to my own thoughts in a church.

Along those lines, you get a lot of people in a church who are there for different reasons. Some have come to sit quietly and do a bit of praying for something that's important to them, or remembering someone they've lost, etc. They're not necessarily there to velcro themselves to someone new and show them around. They might be new there themselves.

Babdoc · 24/01/2023 09:25

mathanxiety, a greeter will not smother you. They will politely welcome you, as a host should a guest, make sure you are given anything you need, such as a hymn book, and ask if you need any help.
You can simply say no thanks, and go and sit in a pew. If you then bow your head and close your eyes, it will be assumed you wish to pray silently and you will be respectfully left in peace.
You need to remember a church is a community of people, engaged in a communal act of worship- they wish to be inclusive and make you welcome. If you prefer to pray alone, that might be easier to achieve at home. God will hear your thoughts wherever you are!

It will be heated but heating can be quite ineffective in old and cold churches with high ceilings.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 24/01/2023 11:09

Not rtft but how about watching a service online first - to get an idea of what happens (cathedrals for example will have these available). And I sneaked out of the ChIristmas midnight service (biggest of the year) very early and the only comment was the church warden asking if ‘I was ok (and that was probably because Im a regular so it was unusual for me to leave early!)

Always4Brenner · 24/01/2023 11:12

HighWindows1 · 23/01/2023 16:02

Yes I watched a local Baptists group on YouTube and a Catholic service - very different! I think I'm looking for something very traditional

You’d be happier in C of E or Catholic. I love our our church a friend took me the 2nd Sunday I moved in. Getting more involved with the faith now.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 24/01/2023 11:13

God says ‘ See you there’

Oigetoffmylawn · 24/01/2023 13:22

Not only can you do this, but you are absolutely encouraged to do so and love it when we get people 'popping in'. You can participate as much or as little as you like and just come as you are (jeans and t shirt welcome!).

Do you think your post helps?

@HighWindows1 , if you have a family church in your area, try that. Have a look at their web site for service times, and there may be services you can watch online to get an idea of what to expect.

StephanieSuperpowers · 24/01/2023 14:13

luckylavender · 24/01/2023 13:25

That's so unhelpful.

I didn't mean it to be unhelpful, just that there's no way for anyone to know why you are there and there's no sign or symbol to indicate that anyone is more entitled to be there than anyone else.

kateandme · 24/01/2023 14:25

Aww yea of course you can. What a god they've got if you couldn't.
Ignore any judge pants that might be there. You get them everywhere.
Find what feels right for you.

WinnieFosterReads · 24/01/2023 14:28

A lot of churches are open during the day so if you want you could nip in during the day when no-one else is there just so can see what the building is like, etc, before you go to a service.

MechanicaHound · 24/01/2023 14:34

Try a few different ones and you will soon find out where you feel more comfortable. Some will be more welcoming than others.
