Undertaking motorbike

Bowbells7 · 23/01/2023 10:14

I've just taken the kids to school and ended up in a rage at a biker.
I was sat at the traffic lights, indicating to turn left, when a motorbike pulled up next to me on the left, then turned left when I did and then undertook me. I blasted the horn at him as I felt it was dangerous for him to be so close to me on the junction. The kids were yelling 'don't hit him' and I was doing my best not to.
I know motorbikes are allowed to filter but surely this is a dangerous thing to do on a junction? Or was I in the wrong for beeping at him?
🤔

Agree with @Bumblefeet and @RobertsRadio And as the car driver in this situation, I would fully expect that the biker was a twat who wanted to get ahead of everyone in the queue and thus I would 100% let him go first because I don't want to be driving anywhere near such a twat. I wouldn't have beeped but I would have muttered something sweary under my breath.

Bikers aren't "twats who want to get ahead" they are perfectly at liberty to filter through traffic. It's legal.

It always cracks me up when people in Estate cars and small vans think they need loads of room to 'swing round'. No you don't need loads of room. Maybe an extra half a foot, not four. Does my head in.

Agreed - it's sad to see such poor standards.

This! 100% the biker was in the wrong. And this is why so many cyclists end up under the wheels of lorries. If you're indicating left or in a left filter lane no way in hell should a bike or motorbike be going up the left side of you. Stupidity.

Depends on where the biker was and whether OP was in fact indicating. I agree with the general premise of staying out of harm's way on 2 wheels - but this isn't the same as cycling up the inside of a moving 8 wheel tipper that's signalling left.

I think we need a diagram.

You need a diagram? What can't you understand?

The only reason to use your horn is to make sure someone knows you are there. There was no need in this instance because he had already pulled alongside you.

Most bikes have greater acceleration than cars so if you were level at the lights he would have naturally pulled away faster.

He shouldn't have pulled up beside you, he should have stayed behind but getting angry with him is a bit pointless. And not something you want your dcs to copy.

MintJulia · 23/01/2023 11:57

If you're in the U.K., the highway code has changed and you as a car driver have a greater duty of care to anyone on two wheels. It's called hierarchy of users and changed exactly a year ago.

rwalker · 23/01/2023 12:13

I drive ,cycle and have motorbike
The only time I would do that move if I was cycling but not on motorbike
difficult to tell without being there but they might of thought you were going straight on or turning right with there being such a gap

irrespective of turning right ,left our whatever I always wait till motorbikes have pulled away before I set off

deducting points for use of horn no need

Viviennemary · 23/01/2023 12:17

Sounds as if you are at fault here. You left a large gap even though you were turning left. I dont the the motorbike rider did anything wrong. Get a smaller car if you can't manage to drive an estaye car.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 23/01/2023 12:25

You drive an estate not a bus, it doesn’t have a massive turning circle where you need to position so far over you leave enough room for a motorbike to fit there 😂 You should be more cautious with your children in the car too.

Was he not indicating left? If no indication surely you would think “I’m not sure what this road users intentions are so, I’ll wait a few seconds to see if he’s going left / straight on to avoid and incident” rather than try and “go first”? You’re supposed to watch out for the more vulnerable road, it sounds like you pulled off and turned left without any concern for the motorbike and just wanted to be first and show him a lesson. As proven by your aggressive honking.

Should he have been there, probably not. But you were unreasonable to show no care and attention to the road, and aggressively beep at someone when you should have been paying more attention.

Perhaos you need a highway code and driving refresher course.

FlissyPaps · 23/01/2023 12:30

Never known a country as bad for road rage as it is in the UK🙄

Hellsmovie · 23/01/2023 13:08

You stopped at a the traffic lights, the bike pulled up beside you clearly visible as you said you saw them. I dont see the issue. It would be no differant if it was a bicycle. With the exception that a motorbike can get ahead quicker

kitsuneghost · 23/01/2023 13:13

If you see a motorbike pull up beside you (either side) just let them go.
They will get away faster than you
Do NOT try to fight for the same space as him. This is dangerous and unecessary
If you feel ragey, pull over and calm down
Driving angry is extremely dangerous.

NameChangingIsAddictive · 23/01/2023 13:50

I ride a motorbike, if a car was in the left lane signalling to turn left and got there before me, even if there was a little space, I would stay behind the car and wait my turn, just as I would if I was in my car.

I do this for my own safety, as primarily my safety is my responsibility. I also do this when cycling.

If a lorry left a gap to turn and was signalling, I also wouldn't take advantage and fill the gap in a car, motorbike or bicycle.

I agree blasting the horn is unnecessary and aggressive most of the time, but if you were at the junction first and signaling and if it was a really tight junction then the biker should have enough road senseto see that and hold back.

Bowbells7 · 23/01/2023 14:02

Some really interesting replies here and surprising how different they are too!
If it happens again I'll let the bike go. It is a really tight junction and I've seen some awful near misses there when buses go round it.
As for the highway code changing I haven't seen any changes on the road. Cars never give way to pedestrians on junctions like they're supposed to now, as I can testify as I walk a lot.
Keep safe on the roads folks 😊

Vehicles were always supposed to give priority to people already crossing a road they were turning into - but usually tried to mow us down.

Kinel · 24/01/2023 02:04

I never turn left anyway

Twampy · 24/01/2023 19:37

I'm a biker and it sounds like the biker was at fault. If I filter through to the front I will sit behind the car at the front of the qué or go to the front if there is room for me in front of the first car. I know I can accelerate away from the junction faster than the car so sitting in front isn't causing an obstruction.
I would never sit along side a car. The biker is most definitely at fault.
I hope that helps
