Roofer costs

Hi
Sorry - selected AIBU for this because I couldn't find a relevant subject.
Just wondered if there were any roofers out there or partners of roofers who could give me some advice. Just had a small part of my roof re-lined (tiles lifted and re-mortared, etc) All done in no more than 3 hrs. Very happy to have had the work done and chap was v pleasant etc. He didn't use scaffolding just a ladder - the old fashioned (non health and safety way!)
Bill is £550 which equates to about £150 an hour plus materials. Is this normal? My ex says I am naive blah blah blah and should have watched carefully what was going on and asked every 5 minutes what are you doing now etc. I know he is right but I just hate that feeling of being ripped off and I am more annoyed with myself. AIBU?

You aren't just paying for the couple of hoursof work - you are paying for the years of experience that allow him to sort the problem in just a couple of hours.

That said, there are dodgy roofers round. If the problem is solved, move on - but maybe try and get more than one quote next time you need work doing.

Notimeforaname · 22/01/2023 15:46

Sounds about right. My partner did a roof over 4 weekends (Sat and Sun) probably about 6-8 hours a day and the bill was about 7 grand. My maths isn't great but it works about 150 an hour ish, does it?

SunSandAndLotsOfGin · 22/01/2023 15:50

£150 an hour for a skilled person to conduct a job is about right where I am.
Even if he was only there for a few hours, he'll have factored in travelling and probably the fact he couldn't do s full days work elsewhere.
Seems very reasonable for the work you've described.

Lincslady53 · 22/01/2023 15:53

Roofers are hard to come by and can charge accordingly. If he did a good job accept it. It took us 3 months to find a roofer to re point our hip tiles, cost £900. A good job, bug I couldn't get any other quotes cos no other roofer came out.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 22/01/2023 15:55

I think you got off lightly at that price

Frumpymumma · 22/01/2023 15:57

Totally normal

Whatdayisitalexa · 22/01/2023 15:57

I thought working off a ladder was a no-no if you are charging

Maybe it's just my area then?

Gymmum82 · 22/01/2023 16:05

I paid £250 for a tile to be replaced repairing a leak. Took less than 30 minutes and I thought it was very reasonable. Yours sounds reasonable too

WillTimeCome · 22/01/2023 16:08

@Whatdayisitalexa , maybe, I thought you were pretty close though in your original statement, so I was a little surprised.

itsbloomincold · 22/01/2023 16:12

I do really appreciate that he did the job and hopefully my roof won't leak now. Reading your comments makes me realise it could have been a lot more expensive - thanks !😘

Yes agreed. I did try to get another quote but I think because it was a small job no one replied to me.
