To be upset at being compared to Beverly from Abigail's Party?

Went to see Abigail's Party at the theatre last night with some friends. We all had to rush off afterwards so chatted about it on WhatsApp this morning.

One of the friends I went with has a very dry sense of humour that I admit I don't always get. However, she's generally very considerate and emotionally aware. She does seem to enjoy my company.

This morning on the chat she said that Beverly reminded her of me and added a laughing face. The conversation abruptly ended because no one replied to it.

I don't see how she could have meant that without being cruel? I can see that I am a bit awkward but I don't think there is any other cross over. I'm a bit upset to think that's how she sees me tbh.

I think I'd reply 'judging by the tumbleweed, it seems no one quite knows how to take that comment, myself especially'.

This isn’t a compliment. And it seems you don’t know her well enough for her to take the piss .

the silence from the others is also not a positive. No one had your back there and I wonder if others think she spoke the unspeakable.

it’s clear the group isn’t close enough for this dynamic.

If it’s any consolation I was once told that with my new glasses I looked like Olive from On The Buses, and everyone in the group started laughing raucously. I had no idea who that was so had to google it later (pre smartphones). Sometimes people are just not nice.

If no one else has commented they probably all agree with her!

either that or they think she was being rude and are slightly stunned?
TBH, its the type of comment that in a conversation you might probe, or there'd be a slight pause and awkwardness, but harder to navigate in a whatsapp chat.

She said it was a joke so I said I didn't understand how. I think she realised she'd upset me. She messaged me and said she meant that sometimes people misunderstand me and because I am a private person they don't always see what I'm trying to do, just the results of it.

I think that's a fair enough point.

I don't see how it relates to Beverly though or why it was the right place/time/way to say that. I've not messed up socially for a while AFAIK so I don't know why she said it or how she expected me to take it even if I understood what she meant.

I think that's made me more upset but am not going to push it.

I don't think she meant it maliciously.

I think so too. I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it but I would keep her at arms length.

maybe she’s not intentionally unkind? She’s at the least, thoughtless so I wouldn’t really want her in my life.

@ExtraOnions all my friends call me Margot. I'd love to be able to pull off a turban and kaftan at an "at home".

It depends what aspect of Beverley she was thinking of. By not saying, the implication is that everyone would know exactly what she means without spelling it out.

It's definitely not a compliment to be compared to Beverley, who eventually suffers, but has brought it on herself.

Your friend knows she's fucked up, and you've seen it by her explanation not matching what you saw on stage. Oh, and it's being private, not a group explanation - not a good look.

One to watch, I'd say.

stitchinguru · 25/01/2023 04:33

Do you say “Top up Ange?” quite regularly?
Or (dare I say) do you flirt with other people’s partners?
I wouldn’t worry - there are far worse characters you could be likened to.

pompomdaisy · 25/01/2023 05:26

You have a clumsy friend. I wouldn't interpret it as anything more than that!
