Not AIBU ... Shameless post for traffic.

DP and I have the opportunity for 2 nights away from home for the first time ever without the kids (we have 8, 3 with SN) and really the most important part is an unbroken nights sleep but I want to make the most of it so wondered if you lovely lot could make some recommendations?

Ideally no more than 1.5 hrs by car from Manchester, with somewhere nice to walk around and somewhere nice to eat?

Really appreciate any responses

TIA

Kind of depends on your budget and what you want from a stay? City/County/Coastal etc?

Possibly Leeds, Liverpool, Chester, Newcastle or Birmingham for a city?

Rabbitheadlights · 21/01/2023 12:34

Honestly I don't care where was thinking somewhere like Chester budget is around £400 so not huge I should have said apologies for that. Either city or rural (I'm thinking cosy pubs and open fires)

Castleton
Plenty of walks

AnotherNameChangeYes · 21/01/2023 12:52

Somewhere in the Peaks/Derbyshire ! I’ll have a think.

Spandang · 21/01/2023 12:56

Clitheroe? I think that’s an hour from Manchester. There’s the Spinning Block for accommodation, lots of lovely restaurants, pubs, shops.

Peak District is lovely or how about York and surrounding areas?

Rabbitheadlights · 21/01/2023 13:04

Peak District looks beautiful and York looks lovely, any particular hotel ideas. I'm scared of booking somewhere and it being dreadful and it will all be wasted so if I can get recommendations based on first hand experience then I can't really go wrong can I.

I'd head to the Peak District or the lakes but I like walking - Keswick has a nice town centre but we usually do air bnb rather than hotels so can't help there sorry.

Just check trip advisor, it's usually quite accurate if you read a number of the reviews.

100% York. Gorgeous place to walk round, some lovely quirky shops to stop and look around. Walk the city walls, stop for a drink at the place Guy Faulkes was born. go and see the carving of the queen outside the minster. Stop for wine and a cheese board at Pairings. So many things to do

I love the lakes too, but it seems to rain without exception every time I go !

If you are thinking York The Churchill hotel was gorgeous!

The Fat Badger in York is lovely. Old pub, right in the centre with lovely rooms and food.

Agreed! Had lovely fish and chips in there. Few nice places down that street to stop

Montague22 · 21/01/2023 15:58

I agree that York is a good shout.

Harrogate might be an option too.
There’s a Victorian Turkish baths, Betty’s tearoom, RHS Harlow Carr and NT Fountains Abbey is about 20 min away. NT Brimham Rocks is also 20 min away and is amazing.

The Little Mill Inn at Raworth.

Friendly staff, roaring fire, great food, lovely rooms, quiet location but popular so not dead in the day but you'll get a decent nights sleep. Good walks, interesting things to look at. New Mills is good for a wander.

The gilpin hotel in Lake District. It has two restaurants. Get a room with a hot tub, it’s lovely!

She lives in Manchester so is used to rain. It always rains when I go to Manchester.

York 100%

Belladonna208 · 21/01/2023 16:31

York is lovely though can't help with any hotel recommendations as we live close enough for a day trip so have never stayed over. Tons to do, though, even if the weather is hideous, and lots of great places to eat.

MindPalace · 21/01/2023 16:33

Grand Hotel York. Lovely

Yajebbend · 21/01/2023 16:33

Buxton crescent is lovely

Hbh17 · 21/01/2023 16:52

Try one of the Chatsworth Estate pubs near Bakewell. Very smart rooms & good food. Enjoy a trip around Chatsworth House & maybe stock up at the farm shop before going home. They are expensive for pubs, but actually good value for the quality of what you get.
Google The Devonshire Arms at Pilsley and also at Beeley.

The gilpin in beautiful but way out of our budget. Some of the others look fab I'm going to send DP some links so he can have a look while he's supposed to be working and make a decision ... Thanks all
