To spend £60 per month on my hair?

CrapeDiem · 21/01/2023 10:01

I've never spent much on my hair, probably less than £150 per year, but impending menopause seems to be playing havoc with it. It's becoming thin, frizzy and flyaway and generally a nightmare.
I treated myself to an expensive salon cut and style for £80 before Christmas.
It was so much better for a few weeks but is now becoming unmanageable again.

AIBU to pay £80 every 6 weeks to keep it under control? That would be £700 per year. It feels crazily self-indulgent.

How much do you spend in the salon? And would you tip on top of £80?

Op I think that is fine, obvs as long as you don’t have to go without food or fuel to do this.

We should spend our spare cash on what makes us feel good. A friend of mine has her gel nails done every week which costs her £30 or so - £1500 a year. It’s fine. Brings her joy! My cut and colour costs £80-100 every eight weeks. I also spend on takeaway coffees - an elderly colleague is shocked but I don’t see the issue. No one in my house is going without and it’s a bright spot in my day (tho I am on a no spend Jan atm!)

I would tip btw esp if the junior washes it or whatever.

Bluevelvetsofa · 21/01/2023 10:08

Does it make you feel better?
Can you afford it?
Do you have to go without something else to be able to afford it?

If you feel that it’s worth it and it isn’t having a negative impact on your finances, why not.

I had an inexpensive haircut, whilst looking for a new hairdresser. I hated it. Now I pay nearly double, but it means I can do something with my hair between visits and feel better about the way it looks. There are things I’ll do without to use a hairdresser who does my hair well.

ThePreacherLikesTheCold · 21/01/2023 10:08

If you can afford it and it brings positivity to your life, then do it!

Mabelface · 21/01/2023 10:08

If you can afford it, then there's no issue at all, just do it. I go to the barber every 6 weeks as the back and sides of my head are shaved. My head, my money, my choice 😊

Incognitomum11 · 21/01/2023 10:10

I didn’t vote because I feel this is up to you, either answer is correct. I wouldn’t but there was a time in my life I did, now I cut my own, I always hated the hairdressers though. Most of my friends spend loads of time and much more money than that every few weeks, if they can afford it then why not?!

LlynTegid · 21/01/2023 10:10

Your choice, if it is well done and as mentioned, not at the expense of something such as food or fuel.

ohdearydearieme · 21/01/2023 10:11

If you can spare the money absolutely spend it on yourself and your hair. I don’t think it is self indulgent, it is self care. Enjoy.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 21/01/2023 10:11

I pay around 120 every 10 weeks. That's for a cut and highlights. There have been times I couldn't afford to do this now I can and I do.

SausageRoll2020 · 21/01/2023 10:11

As long as you can afford it then it's absolutely fine

HikingforScenery · 21/01/2023 10:11

If you can afford it, why not?
you can’t put a price on your well-being.

TomatoSandwiches · 21/01/2023 10:12

If you can afford it why on earth not?

I do my own nails but spend twice as much on my hair because it needs professional care to look decent and helps me feel confident.

Iateallthechips · 21/01/2023 10:13

If you can afford it, go for it. I would if I could.

For context, I can’t. I go to the hairdresser on my street who charges £9.75 for a trim once every two years 🤣

Princessglittery · 21/01/2023 10:14

I spend £60 every 7-8 weeks for a simple cut and blow dry, worth every penny.

ShakespearesBlister · 21/01/2023 10:15

That's a months shopping for some people. Hair is dead beyond its root. I couldn't justify spending £80 a month on something that is dead myself.

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/01/2023 10:17

If you can afford it it’s fine.

You wear your hair everyday so in the style and beauty category, it’s going to be one of your top priorities.

Mischance · 21/01/2023 10:18

This is why my hair is long. I can't bear having to spend a fortune on a cut and then have to pay again in a few weeks - and having to rely on the cut being good is a problem. When mine was shorter I used to come home and wash it straight away as I could not stand it!

Luredbyapomegranate · 21/01/2023 10:18

ShakespearesBlister · 21/01/2023 10:15

Both these points are irrelevant (and the second one is bonkers.)

Mangolist · 21/01/2023 10:18

The only thing I spend money on is my hair. £90 for a cut and blow dry every two months. Most people think I'm mad, but I've been seeing my hairdresser for over 25 years and he is brilliant!

CocoPlum · 21/01/2023 10:20

Of course if you can afford it.

I rarely get my hair cut, but I do get my eyebrows shaped once a month. I would cut stuff from my budget to afford it as I hate doing them!

Hagrod · 21/01/2023 10:25

I don;t want to influence you but as you asked...if you can afford it, I say do it. It sounds fab!

Montague22 · 21/01/2023 10:26

I used to go every 8-10 weeks and spend a few weeks thinking my hair looked rubbish. I now go every 6-7. I think your hair has a massive impact on your appearance.

I would tip, and sometimes I question why hairdressers, but I’d just give an extra £5.

Snowybeach · 21/01/2023 10:27

I personally wouldn’t but I know lots of people who go to the hairdresser every 6-8 weeks and they have all got nicer hair than me!

Iceicebabytoocold · 21/01/2023 10:30

If you can afford it do it. I am going through the menopause at the moment and if it gives you a lift and has a positive impact you, do it and enjoy it x

JacksPottedPepper · 21/01/2023 10:32

I spend £900 a year on Denplan for 4 of us to go the dentist. Just a check up and hygienist. I probably spend the same amount on my hair and I bet you can tell which one makes me feel joy. If you can afford it and it makes you happy so what if it costs that much?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/01/2023 10:33

Hi OP, I changed from a hairdresser who charged £ 120 for a colour cut and blow dry to one who charges £ 70 for the same, because although I was cutting costs when fuel bills and food prices went through the roof, having my hair done every 6/8 weeks is a luxury I wasn't about to give up. £70 was OK budget wise, £ 120 I was struggling to justify to myself. If you can afford it, why not?
