Sorry don’t know where to post this so chose the busiest board.

How do you actually go from competent beginner to doing much more advanced yoga?

I have been doing group classes for quite a while. My teacher is great and she really spices things up with moves, flow, themes etc. but how do you learn the really complex stuff like handstands, head stands, arm balances etc?

No...not kundalini...tried that twice...its all chanting and swaying ...everyone dressed in white and white turbans....i think my class is more astanga.

we use belts and blocks and bolsters

....or could it have been iyengar- which uses lots of yoga props?

My nirvana is Crow. I've been doing daily practice (around 1 hr) since 2020 and before that many years of twice weekly classes, and despite doing a reasonable downdog, and core strength, Crow is on a different level in terms of arm strength, balance and stability. My arms and wrists probsbly just aren't strong enough, maybe I should get into the gym and do specific arm exercises, but I don't want to get muscly arms! I think it may be one pose that will always elude me, but I keep trying -and wobbling--

The great thing about yoga is that you're never done, there's always something new to experience and learn.

My top tip is not to stick with the same teacher, whether 'in the room' or online, although that may be difficult depending on where you live, as good yoga teachers aren't plentiful. I've had some great teachers, but equally I've had some appalling ones that don't have a clue (sorry that isn't very yogic is it Grin )

Online I have 4 fab fave teachers:

Kassandra
Adriene
Travis Elliott
Lesley Fightmaster (very sadly no longer with us, but she has left a legacy of wonderful Hatha Yoga sessions

There are a couple of other who are also lovely that I dip in and out of sometimes

Aprill Walker The Yoga Ranger Studio
Sarah Collins - nice for Yin stretches

@Hedjwitch when I started I found downward dog equally unbearable, but it's surprising how quickly your body adjusts. In a few weeks, you'll find it a relaxing pose!

I find headstands a lot easier when using a yoga stool to keep my head off the floor.

It puts all the weight on the shoulders and stops me thinking I’m going to snap my neck.

Find an Ashtanga Mysore class / programme. I started at 25 and am now 45 - best decision I ever made

Another thing I find important to remember is that not only has my yoga teacher done literally hundreds of hours more practice than me, she's also having to support a lot less weight with each pose than I am. Things like crow are literally easier, because she's stronger than I am and a lot lighter than I am.

Thank you. Its a mixed class and the teacher is lovely and very kind but I dont find it relaxing at all. I just get angry and frustrated with myself so I get stressed and demoralised. I do realise this is me,not the class, but I'm beginning to wonder if its for me

I've offered this on here before but if anyone wants it (it's unlimited and I don't gain from it!)
I have a 60 day peloton app trial, use it on your phone/iPad/TV and there is loads of yoga
You can pick from focus flows (certain poses), slow flow, beginner, restorative, and by time/instructor too and it goes up to advanced (power yoga and arm balances, handstands etc)
Cancel on day 59 so you don't have to pay Grin or it's about £13pm
Just PM me or ask and I will send you the link
There's also Pilates, barre etc
