To think that the 45 pence mileage rate needs updating?

The 45p rate was last updated tax year 2010-2011.

It's intended to compensate people using their own car for business use when claiming expenses.

I did 66 miles this week and realised I'm going to get £29 back.

I get the whole fiscal drag thing but people are literally going to be subsidising their employers here aren't they?

YANBU, the only people against this are politicians and those who can’t count

Runnerduck34 · 20/01/2023 21:00

Definitely needs updating

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 20/01/2023 21:02

Yanbu. It won't be though.

Skullduggeryfizz · 20/01/2023 21:07

I really wish they would. I am a career working for a company and we get 30 pence a mile. We have asked for it to be increased when petrol was nearing £1.90 a litre but were told no.

XanaduKira · 20/01/2023 21:18

YANBU Op but I doubt it'll happen!

Christmascracker0 · 20/01/2023 21:28

45p/mile is the HMRC approved rate. Your employer could pay you more per mile if they wanted to, but you would be taxed on the difference.

blubberyboo · 20/01/2023 21:38

Yanbu I’ve thought that for years

Streamside · 20/01/2023 21:49

Surely HMRC need to look at the rate, it can't still be applicable.

@Skullduggeryfizz if you are travelling to temporary workplaces you can claim the tax back on the 15p a mile difference using a P87 form with HMRC.

AnotherAppleThief · 20/01/2023 21:57

Totally agree! I've just done my self assessment as was thinking exactly the same.

Summerhillsquare · 20/01/2023 22:55

No. Drivers have been subsidised for years compared to public transport users. People drove as much as they could to get the rate, for years.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 20/01/2023 22:57

Definitely!

YANBU.

I have a company car. I pay for the fuel and reclaim the cost at the HMRC approved mileage rate. No speculation as to the cost of wear and tear, pure and simply to cover the fuel costs. The HMRC rate does not cover the cost and hasn't for a long time.
