Hospital want to send sister home but to think they should be doing more?

Not sure if I’m reacting emotively and expecting too much so wanted to seek opinions before we say anything.

My sister really wasn’t well so after repeat trips to the docs my niece decided she needed to go urgent care. Docs had diagnosed really bad flu and tonsillitis. She was being sick as well and couldn’t keep anything in, even the antibiotics.

UC tested her urine and found lots of blood so they then sent her to A&E who tested her bloods and said she probably never had flu, she’s got high infection markers and inflammation which is why she felt so rough. Arranged an X-ray and CT scan which came back clear so they are sending her home, she’s still being sick and can’t keep anything down.

So aibu to think that they shouldn’t be sending her home until they found the cause of the infection? Or at the very least until she can keep the antibiotics down?

Surely she's had IV antibiotics?

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 20/01/2023 16:29

Is she able to eat tic taks?

(I realise this is an unhelpful comment and I hope your sister feels better soon.)

Supernova23 · 20/01/2023 16:31

How long has she been vomiting for? and how old is she? in an otherwise fit, healthy young ish person, you can probably deal with a few days of vomiting and feeling crap at home without a massive cause for concern. Their scans should have ruled out any immediate acute concerns. Surely they have sent her away with anti emetics?

Colderthanever · 20/01/2023 16:33

Is it not the tonsillitis? This gives a fever and can cause vomiting. As the gunge on the infected tonsils makes you want to puke.

Colderthanever · 20/01/2023 16:34

Sorry to clarify the infection will be her tonsils.

Chowtime · 20/01/2023 16:34

An anti-emetic injection should stop the vomiting. I'm surprised they haven't given her that if she can't keep anything down because they ususally like to see you eat/drink/pee before they discharge you.

Is your sister underweight normally?

Silvers11 · 20/01/2023 16:44

So have they given her anything at all while she was in the hospital? Anti-emetic injection? Any more anti-biotics? Anything?

Poorlysister · 20/01/2023 16:52

I wouldn’t say underweight but she is petite. No injection offered but I’ll make sure she asks.

It’s not the tonsillitis, docs have said that themselves and also that wouldn’t cause high levels of blood in her urine.

Sorry yes she has had IV antibiotics but repeat blood test is still showing high levels of infection and inflammation.

if she’s young and fairly clinically well there’s no reason she can’t go home with oral antibiotics. If she’s unable to take oral medication or is unable to take care of herself then yes she should remain in hospital.

dottycat123 · 20/01/2023 17:16

I would assume that her blood tests do not indicate that her renal function is impaired so not clinically dehydrated and inflammatory markers can take time to come down once infection is resolving. As long as she can tolerate the oral antibiotics and sip water she is likely better at home. I would suggest keeping an eye on her temperature and noting that she is still passing urine.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 20/01/2023 17:17

That sounds to me more like a kidney infection. Ask if that could be the cause. Yes to the anti-emetics to keep the antibiotics down and fluids down. That should all be able to be be sorted as take home medication I would think.

Poorlysister · 20/01/2023 18:00

So they’ve discharged her and she’s on her way home. They basically said they don’t know what has caused her infection, come back if she is sick again.

Redundant point now but I’ve just found out she was having the anti sickness stuff via the cannula as well but was still being sick.

So have they given her anti-sickness meds and antibiotics to take home? If so, she is probably better at home to be honest. It sounds more like a kidney infection honestly- as well as the tonsilitis, so not much they can do in the hospital that can't be done at home? Dehydration is the thing she needs to guard against when she is home, from what you say.

What age is she?

Poorlysister · 21/01/2023 19:53

She is 37 and thankfully has stopped being sick so has been keeping all the medicine down.

She still feels really rough though and the amount of blood in her urine has increased significantly, the toilet water is a dark red after she has been.

Some of you said sounds like a kidney infection, how does that get diagnosed? Wouldn’t it show up on the scans she had, because her discharge papers said her kidneys were normal but she has some benign cysts.

We don’t want to unnecessarily worry but there is obviously something going on to cause the bleeding to increase despite having IV antibiotics.

I don’t think it’s related but she suffers with endometriosis and has already had a hysterectomy.
