I mean like the one here in the picture (not sure what the actual name is and can't find proper info on google)?

EMF. That's unbelievable.

Brava 👏👏👏

this is not fully reassuring

If it's any help OP, my DH is a scientist who specialises in radiation issues and he had no worries whatsoever about the massive substation at the end of our garden.

Furball · 20/01/2023 14:35

But these appear to be phone lines

The picture is of a telephone pole, not a power line.

Tinkerbyebye · 20/01/2023 16:17

That looks like a BT pole to me. But any way, no to power poles. In rural areas there are bucketloads as that’s the only way, historically power could be got there. They have big yellow signs on stating danger from death

but as to living with them, no no issue

NotDavidTennant · 20/01/2023 16:20

The cables are connected to the phone socket in your house where you'd connect your landline phone or internet. Unless you're going to live in a house without phone or internet then you're going to have exposure to EMF wherever you live.

PortiasBiscuit · 20/01/2023 16:22

You’ll be fine as long as you keep your tinfoil hat on..

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 20/01/2023 16:29

OP, do you have a mobile phone in your house? Do you ever have it in your bedroom? Near your pillow?

I always call these telegraph poles. Which must be totally old fashioned now seeing as we don’t send telegraphs anymore!

So do I.

The village I grew up in has so many it would be impossible to live there without being close to one. I think it would be pretty obvious if they were a health issue.

Don't climb them is what I remember. They were covered at the bottom with thick tar stuff to discourage climbing. Dm was not impressed when dsis came in after trying.

You can never be too careful (sorry OP).

..and of course even take phone/internet away and the (AC) mains supply will be producing an associated EMF.

That is a telegraph pole. It is dangerous only in the sense that people use the cables they carry to connect to the internet and post nonsense conspiracy theories about EMF and 5G masts and Jo Biden being a satanist.

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/01/2023 19:21

We have an overhead elecctricity supply with poles and cables . We also have telephone cables and poles for our old landline. We are in a street with houses of a similar age to those in your picture. Totally safe unless you climb up them without knowing what you are doing.

Bard6817 · 20/01/2023 19:37

Thts likely a telephone pole.

Yiu can tell electrical power lines by the use of insulating discs on either side of the pole and a cable from one side to another. The idea being that the pole can never be connected to high power.

High voltage power lines are a huge issue though. I’ve worked in places where the lines went overhead and the computers were affected by them, so go knows what they actually do to our bodies/brains, if the moon is responsible for ‘lunacy’ lol. Thankfully it was a very short term gig.

But you’re fine - those poles carry very very low wattage, almost as little as the led lights in your home.

cakeorwine · 20/01/2023 20:10

Isn't it the US where they have overhead local power lines with transformers? I seem to remember that from movies where they explode

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 20/01/2023 20:11

Not unless it falls on your head

toomanyhobbies · 20/01/2023 20:15

We have those poles in every street where I live built up area. I know ours carry both the phone and power lines.

They continue to look. Nobody has found evidence of harm yet.

Your photo is of what are known in the UK as telegraph poles, op, and are not considered dangerous as far as I know. I think if you look up telephone poles, which isn’t a term commonly used here, you may get info about mobile phone signal masts, which have been linked to health problems, as have electricity pylons, which are huge structures carrying high voltage power cables across the uk, usually in the countryside rather than towns.
