Is this normal during sex?

Ok, before anyone jumps and calls me a troll, I’m NOT, I’m an established poster who has changed their username. Also even though this is sex related, I’m not going to go into graphical details obviously as it’s not appropriate and not entirely relevent.

basically, during sex recently I’ve been having a lot of abdominal pain. I googled it and it fits the description of Dysorgasmia. Its usually located below my belly button and usually to the left hand side, or centre left. It’s like I’m being stabbed by an ice pick or a knife, it’s not a general pain across the area, it’s very sharp and painful and takes a few minutes (sometimes longer) to ease off. At first it was uncomfortable but tolerable but now when it’s happening I’m doubling over in pain

i hadn’t had sex before until relatively recently so my experience with what’s normal and isn’t normal is somewhat limited! and I’ve never had sex so close to my period being due (it’s due in a few days) so I wasn’t sure if that had affected it, but I haven’t had cramps any other time and I don’t usually get painful cramps anyway? This problem has only really started a week or so ago and is getting worse each time it happens.

When I googled it, it said it usually resolves itself and is often harmless, but it’s getting worse each time and im in so much pain when it happens, it’s honestly like im being stabbed with a knife. But I know things like trapped wind can cause agonising stomach pain but I feel like that wouldn’t be specific to this exact situation and the pain would be more frequent? I just remember being taught that pain during sex should be kept an eye on (I don’t remember what for though!) but I think that is more for vaginal pain rather than abdominal?

sorry I’m ranting a bit now, I’m not asking for personal stories or experiences but just if anyone had any ideas or advice to stop it it would be appreciated!

Because you said it happens close to your period, and on the left side, makes me think it could be because of constipation which is common in the days before a period. Does that seem a likely cause?

Shauna27 · 20/01/2023 01:01

Its definitely not 'normal'. Any pain during/after sex is usually recommended a GP visit.

that could be it! I haven’t noticed any constipation and it’s not something (thankfully!) I usually suffer from but I’ll keep an eye out over the next few days to see if that’s it and I’ll eat some high fibre foods and see if that helps. Thanks!

You should definitely see GP for further investigations

Sorry, I probably explained it badly- I knew it wasn’t normal but I suppose what I meant was is it something I should be concerned about or is it just one of those aches and pains that’s annoying but harmless!

@JustaquickNCtah ah I see. I would definitely have it checked out if it persists as it could be related to your kidneys/bladder or possibly appendix. I've never experienced naval/abdomen pain during/after sex so I would be a little concerned as to what could be causing it. Someone suggested it might be constipation which could absolutely be the case, or even just some trapped wind. But it's better to get advice from your GP incase it's something more serious.

postcardpuffin · 20/01/2023 01:10

You should see a GP - you probably need a pelvic ultrasound just to rule out things like ovarian cysts. But any pain like that that had you doubling over isn’t right and needs investigating!

LadyOfTheFliessssss · 20/01/2023 01:12

I think you need to rule out an ovarian cyst as well as any other possible causes.

CharlotteRose90 · 20/01/2023 01:30

I have had pains like that yes but only when I had ovarian cysts. You need to get checked out. Don’t leave it .

Tophy124 · 20/01/2023 01:34

Could be endometriosis. I’d see a Dr

Insideallday · 20/01/2023 01:35

Yes get it checked, no one….especially google will tell you what it is, it could be a number of things. Are you up to date with smears? I have endometriosis and get pain in my left side when having sex.

nomorechoco · 20/01/2023 01:35

I had pain like this for about a year and it went away. It was after I had my son so I put it down to the caesarean. However, it came back years later and I it turned out to be a hernia. May not be this of course but get it checked.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 20/01/2023 01:51

I think any stabbing abdominal pain that leaves you doubled over needs to be investigated by a Dr. It might be what Google or pps have suggested, it might not - you really can't diagnose yourself with something like this.

lifeinthehills · 20/01/2023 02:11

So many possible causes. I'd see a doctor.

ChickpeaPie · 20/01/2023 03:31

Sounds like the pain I had with ovarian cysts

BunchHarman · 20/01/2023 05:36

You should really see a doctor.

2bazookas · 20/01/2023 05:39

Its not normal at any time of the month and you need to see your GP.

Gunpowder · 20/01/2023 05:43

Defo one for the GP or sexual health clinic if you live near one.
