To be worried about cancelled car insurance

Got married end of Septemeber . Rang my car insurance today to change my name. Current project is changing name on everything to married name. They couldn't do it and said there was a computer error. Something about I have had a policy with them for a while and cus there's been changes its preventing it from going through????? I've changed my address and car in the time I've been with them. I was told they are cancelling my policy!!!! They put me through to take out a new policy but it was 400 pounds more. I had to cancel it. At least they are going to refund me. I had to take out a new policy with a new company. Was really stressed and just hope I've picked the same things I had on my policy before .
My worry is I've since read online that cancelled policies mean that you may have trouble getting insurance in the future.
There was no reason for them to cancel it. I pay upfront once a year and gave a good credit record. They are just saying its their computer problem. I'm worried about the future and getting insurance.

It’s not an issue because it will be logged as cancelled at your request.

Sorry it’s been so stressful btw. Perhaps the new company will treat you better. I think it’s outrageously sexist that they tried to charge you an extra £400 for being a Mrs.

I wish I'd thought to say this! I was just so stressed at the time.

It's ok if you cancel the policy or if circumstances change (eg you sell the car, change your name etc) so it has to be a new policy. The thing you're worried about is when they cancel the policy.

Usually if an insurer cancels a policy it's for bad reasons, (fraud or something). As long as you're insured and your new insurer knows why the policy had to be cancelled that's fine.

Don't worry about it, but if you ever change address or car again in future you do have to tell them immediately.

cakeorwine · 19/01/2023 23:24

Did you say you had car insurance and since getting the policy, not only have you changed your name but also your address and car?

And then the new policy they quoted increased by £400?

There's no issue if you cancel it. But I can see that changing address and car when you have car insurance will change the costs. In fact, I think that if you change your car, then your insurance isn't valid for your new car.

I don't think it was this that caused the amount to change.

Having a different car to the one on the policy and moving to a new address would be the reason for the £400.

I changed my address February and the car in July and I told them about those changes when they happened.

She’d already done those changes months ago. The only change was to being a Mrs.
