To say no to DC football outside whilst they have colds?

DC (7&8) do outdoor football one evening in the week and a match on a weekend morning. DH is coach so at the weekend they play a match then have to wait around a bit. They are wrapped up but when they actually play, it's football kit and skins. They've been soaked to the bone twice recently with the bad weather and the frost and now they both have yet another cold (3rd since Dec). Their chests are their weak area.
AIBU to keep them in tonight and the weekend one as well? Why can't they play indoors over the winter lol.
I don't know if I'm being over the top but surely getting so cold and wet on a regular basis isn't helping?

If it's just a cold and they want to play, I'd let them play. I think if you stop kids activities when they feel fine, but have a cold everyone would be off from November to March.

Obviously, if they're feeling under the weather or have a temperature then that's different.

If its just colds and they want to go then YABU

Fresh air outdoors is great for them. I would just wrap them up better. Get them a waterproof light jacket for training, shower and change straight after training. For matches I send my DS with an umbrella to stand under when not playing, also change into dry clothes straight afterwards either in the changing rooms or car. Also is hanging around after training get DH to put them into the car or else put a warmer jacket on.

Dont let them stand around in wet clothes getting cold. I think that is the key, I think when they are playing they will keep warm, its what happens afterwards that is the important part.

I think it’s fine to miss activities if they’re unwell with a cold.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 19/01/2023 13:24

You just take off the wet clothes and put on warm dry clothes when the match has finished. What do you expect them to play in other than kit and skins?

Parky04 · 19/01/2023 13:33

When they play a match, they are allowed to wear base layers, gloves, and at their age, a hat if they so wish. If they want to play, then let them.

There's often nowhere to get changed afterwards so I dry them off as soon as possible in the van.

TBH I think I'm overthinking this. I feel like I've got health anxiety with all the illnesses we've had over winter!

Like you say, they play with gloves/skins/lightweight jacket etc. Just take off the wet clothes and put on warm dry clothes when the match has finished. I can do this when I'm there but he'll have to sort them out between matches when I'm not there. He tries his best to see to them but he's got to get on with the next game as well. I really need to go with him every week to get them sorted afterwards as he's running around trying to do 5 things at once.

Football outside doesn't cause viruses. Playing inside would spread them more easily.

If they want to play let them.

Mariposista · 19/01/2023 13:50

Totally unreasonable and a bit precious. Fresh air is good for them! And being cold doesn't cause a cold you know hahahaha
If they feel well enough, off they go.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 19/01/2023 14:19

At 7 and 8 they should be able to take off wet clothes and pop on some dry ones

MaverickGooseGoose · 19/01/2023 14:46

YABU, let them play!

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 19/01/2023 14:53

For in between primarks version of a dry robe. They’re made for swimmers. We use them in the beach after paddle boarding and you just need to warm up in your wetsuit. Doesn’t matter if they’re wet. The dry robe will help.

realmsofglory · 19/01/2023 14:55

dont you put them in base layers??

lailamaria · 19/01/2023 19:40

YABU colds aren't from actually being cold you are aware right, yeah it's uncomfortable but just pack them a bag with fresh clothes in afterwards and let them change they don't need to be supervised just to change clothes
