To ask about mobile data roaming abroad - outside EU?

I’m travelling outside the EU atm, and bought a package with EE (my phone provider) a few days ago, to be able to use data roaming in any country as part of the package.

I had a confirmation message from EE a few days ago to say I could now use the package to roam anywhere in the world, but have never used anything like that before, so bit nervous about messing up somewhere along the way and being hit with a horribly high phone bill.

Is anyone able to confirm that I’m doing things as I should be? The add-on to roam anywhere has cost around £11.50 per month, and my understanding is, whilst I’m paying for the add-on, this means I can basically use my data allowance as normal abroad as if I was in the UK. Does this sound right?

Thanks!

It will depend on the wording of your contract, but £11.50/month to use UK allowance sounds very cheap to me.

Are you sure it isn't £11.50 per day?

Also worth noting by outside Europe I'm assuming it's still somewhere that's a normal holiday place like USA . If you've gone somewhere really werid and wonderful all bets are off I'm afraid!

You haven't said what country. Looking at the EE website, I can't find a package that allows you to use your data in every country. There is a Roam Abroad Pass that allows you to use your package in 47 European countries, plus US, Canada, Mexico Australia, New Zealand. Is that what you have?

Aeroflot21 · 19/01/2023 11:56

Thanks Jaunty. I agree that £11.50 per month does seem comparatively cheap, and perhaps too cheap. I’m a pay-monthly customer with EE as I have a monthly contract with them.

These are the messages I got from them when I bought the roam further pass, which I understood will allow me to just use my allowance as normal in any country as if I was in the UK. I’ll be travelling in New Zealand.

Depending on the country you are visiting, with an unlocked phone you might be able to get a cheap Sim card at your destination. This will of course mean that you are temporarily on a different number. You can re-insert your regular SIM card to check on missed calls, but it can be a money saver.

I worked for EE contact centre until last November, you’ve got the right one OP. Just remember you will have to take it off when you come back or will be billed again, also it’s a 50GB fair use policy but should be more than enough.

Brill thanks v much for confirming @Just4ThisThread!! Can I check, should I have any further messages/proof from EE that I have this pass, or are the ones I posted here enough? And am I right in thinking that this pass will let me use my normal allowance in NZ as if I was in the UK? Thanks!

Your first screenshot appears to be from the app which is traced on your account so if you faced any issues EE would be able to see when it was activated and also when the phone first connected and then disconnected from foreign networks.

The text isn’t for the pass but instead for network availability, they’ve removed any international block so the network can be used outside the EU.

Your phone should be working as it would at home with no extra charge, however looks like and iPhone so may have to activate Roaming within the phones Mobile Data settings. Just turn this to On if not already.

Everything looks to be good to go 😊

I'm with O2 the bolton for NZ is £6 per day, I just sorted this out for my mum who on that basis decided to not use it and only use wifi!
