AIBU not to offer partial refund for FB marketplace item?

Im ready for the truth here.

I recently sold a table with 4 chairs on FB market place, it’s a tall table so had bar chairs that are adjustable in height.

We had the table up against a wall so only used 2/4 of the chairs (as the other 2 were then under the table against the wall) and didn’t use the table at all for the past 6 months, hence selling it.

I listed for £85 but took £50 as the couple purchasing haggled down and I just wanted it gone.

They came to ‘view’ the table Sunday, loved it and then came back yesterday to collect.

Ive just had a message from them saying one of the chairs doesn’t stay up all the time if sat on, They sent a video so aren’t lying. It was one of the chairs we didn’t use so had no idea before selling, and they didn’t test the chairs when they came to view.

Considering they already haggled down to a point where most would have paid the same just for the table, AIBU to apologise but not offer a partial refund? I’ve always purchased on FB in a sold as seen manner so not sure what to do.

Sold as seen. Plus you have no guarantee they haven’t done it. If it’s just the gas has gone than they diy fix it themselves.

Bubbles456 · 18/01/2023 21:44

Sold as seen!

Even if you did partially refund it would literally be for a few pounds so just not with the effort on either side surely?!

ThreeLittleDots · 18/01/2023 21:44

Yeah, sold as seen. You already gave them a good deal.

Abba123 · 18/01/2023 21:49

I’m in two minds.

Yes they should have checked etc but you seem quite accepting in that it could have been broken and the same could be said that you should have checked too.

You’re within your rights but I don’t think it feels good.

I’d offer a full refund to take the entire item back to call their bluff.

If they take you up on it, sell it again with a mention of the chair and I’m sure you’ll still get the money or more and you get to be one of the good guys.

modgepodge · 18/01/2023 21:51

I’d tell them they are welcome to return the entire set for a full refund if they like, given you’ve already given a £35 discount. I doubt they’ll be bothered to do that! Sold as seen.

I’m also in two minds, I’m actually quite surprised as I thought I’d get my bottom handed to me on here!

I don’t want to take the item back so am worried if I call their bluff, they’ll accept (as have no where to store it now, as new table is already in)

Gah

They’ve already had quite a hefty discount. I wouldn’t be giving any more.

It sounds like a total bargain. I agree with the others that you should offer to take the whole lot back and full refund, because even with a broken chair it is still almost certainly worth more than £50, and they must know that. It they do want to return it you could ask them to hold on to it for a few more days while you list it on eBay if you have nowhere to keep it.

workiskillingme · 18/01/2023 22:11

Utter piss takers
I wouldn't engage

EmmaDilemma5 · 18/01/2023 22:16

I'd offer to give them their money back if they bring table and chairs back. No discounts.

£50 is VERY good value for a table and 4 chairs. Presumably they can buy another if need be. And if they can't, and need 4 chairs, then they can return the whole lot for their money back.

Weddi · 18/01/2023 22:18

They already haggled to £50 which I’m guessing is way under its actual worth, even with one faulty chair. Just block them.

RaiseTheStakesAndMakeTheLastWordDuckhead · 18/01/2023 22:26

FB marketplace is sold as seen. End of. They came and looked at table and chairs, they had the option to try everything out. They will just have to either accept it or sell the set on themselves.

Tell them the table alone was worth £50 and block.

AnneElliott · 18/01/2023 22:36

Sold as seen - I wouldn't offer a refund. You're not a shop! Once they take possession of it then it's up to them. Plus they got a big discount from you.

FBfiend · 18/01/2023 22:37

These replies are so reassuring, thank you!

Will apologise but leave it at that and block if they get funny about it! (And hope they don’t turn up at the house Blush)

Have they actually asked for a partial refund?
