Will DD get sick from this incident at nursery?

Not really an Aibu but also I have severe anxiety and DH says I am being ridiculous. Could use a handhold.

For context - we picked up DD from nursery this evening and were told that another kid had an explosive nappy and that my DD had sat in it. I have no idea how long she wandered around with poo on her clothes or the potential that she put her hands in her mouth after touching it - but this has completely sent me into a spiral.

I'm so anxious she's going to have picked up some horrible virus or something worse - and know my ocd and anxiety is maybe blowing it out proportion.

Please someone tell me their kids have had equally gross situations or that DD will be ok!

Well yes possibly she could.
but if otherwise pretty decent immunity… I wouldn’t worry

worse case she gets the squits for a day or two

Maybe, maybe not.

Nevermind31 · 18/01/2023 17:51

Well, yes, of course she could. You’ll know if/ when she is vomiting or has an explosive nappy. Nothing you can do about it

sevenoneseventhree · 18/01/2023 17:54

It happens, she may get sick but she will get sick at some point at nursery anyway.

MatildaTheCat · 18/01/2023 17:56

Even if she does come down with a D&V illness it may not be due to this incident. It’s obviously doing the rounds and the unwell child probably picked it up without having sat in another child’s poo.

If she gets unwell it’s a pity because nobody wants illness in the house but it’s not a catastrophe. Repeat this to yourself often.

Nurseries and infant schools are germ broth. Think about the average carpet area - and the number of pairs of piddly knickers, badly wiped bums in shorts and summer dresses, spilt milk and snack trodden in and whatever the shoes have walked through... actually you might not want to think too deeply about it.

I lowered my standards substantially after I complained to DD1 that the end of her pigtail was crusty one night and to stop chewing the bloody thing - and she told me that she hadn't been - she'd given it to her carpet neighbours who were both sat there chewing on one each with DD1 in the middle like some pigtailed bit of liquorice!

I'm sure she'll be fine. Even if she gets a tummy bug for a few days, assuming she's fit and healthy, she'll soon be fine again.

Unfortunately germs and bugs do go around nurseries. Usually it's air bourne germs through coughs, sneezes or plain old breathing or from kids touching things that another child has touched. Direct contact with poop is a bit grim but unfortunately hygiene isn't very high up most toddlers awareness. Kids at nursery get ill quite regularly. It helps build their immune system up.

All you can do is wait and see. You'll usually know in 24 - 48 hours.

Whatatimetobealivetoday · 18/01/2023 18:03

Awww OP, I’m not surprised you are upset, it would upset me too but it’s just an unfortunate incident and likely the nursery staff would have given her a good clean and sorted it out as quickly as they could.

If I was you I would put her clothes on a hot wash on their own, give her a lovely bath and hair wash and carry on as normal.

There are germs that can cause illness in our daily lives but it’s completely normal for babies and toddlers to get them to build their immune system. Getting covered in another babies poop is not a normal daily occurrence but hopefully it’s just more disgusting than a concern.

Aww, sorry that happened.
It's gross but gross things happen with kids all the time always have and always will! We absolutely cannot control it even though we'd like, we can only deal with whatever does or doesn't happen next

chocolatebuttonlover · 18/01/2023 18:11

Thank you everyone for kind words - I guess what's done is done so time will tell! Hopefully she's got an iron stomach like her dad

@CoffeeWithCheese that made me absolutely crack up! Thank you for bringing a smile to my face on a very miserable evening!

@CoffeeWithCheese
😂😂. Sorry for laughing, but I had a vision of your DD placidly sat there ‘like a stick of licorice’
as her friends quietly chewed her plaits!!

Why is this so bloody funny 😂😂😂😂

It's done now @chocolatebuttonlover . You'll know in the next day or so..Hopefully she has a strong stomach, and you have a peaceful weekend. If she does get something.... then that's just a boost to get immune system for next time.

Lastminutebride · 18/01/2023 18:51

the explosive nappy might not mean the child was unwell or is infective. My daughter was forever having explosive runny nappies, that’s just how she was, possibly related to food intolerances.
