Should I correct a teacher?

Sadgirlonatrain · 18/01/2023 13:17

In my son's recent geography homework, one of the questions on the sheet referred to the decline of coal mining in the North East.

"How would this of effected the area?"

No wonder the use of 'would of' is so widespread now, never mind the incorrect use of 'effected.'

Would you say anything to the school?

Absolutely say something!! That’s illiterate and disgraceful.

Merryoldgoat · 18/01/2023 13:19

Yes and I’d be pissed off about it too.

NuffSaidSam · 18/01/2023 13:19

Yes.

I couldn't not say something.

LadyDanburysHat · 18/01/2023 13:19

Oh absolutely. I would happily be 'that parent' for something like that.

TheFrozenCanal · 18/01/2023 13:19

My relative is a teacher and murders the use of "and I / and me /myself". I don't correct but I do use those phrases correctly as much as I can on the family chat.

Knittedfairies · 18/01/2023 13:20

My fingers would have itched to correct the worksheet, but I wouldn't have (of?) done it.

7Worfs · 18/01/2023 13:20

Ofc you need to flag.
Being literate is the absolute bare minimum in education.

Thereisnolight · 18/01/2023 13:21

I would complain. And I say that as someone whose DC is dyslexic. Sometimes spellings don’t matter but they most certainly do if you’re teaching your pupils the wrong thing. Tell the school that the lazy mare/muppet needs to up their game and prepare work properly.

Mosaic123 · 18/01/2023 13:21

Tricky. Very tricky.

I would probably leave it on this occasion given that something much more important would come up at school and I would need to complain about it.

PinkiOcelot · 18/01/2023 13:21

Yes definitely mention it.

Fleur405 · 18/01/2023 13:22

I despair!

And yes I think I would complain about this.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 18/01/2023 13:22

Absolutely. That’s shocking.

Emmamoo89 · 18/01/2023 13:22

Definitely mention it

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 18/01/2023 13:23

Not unless they are a poor geography teacher or it’s a public school that you are paying for. You are just going to put the teacher’s nose out of joint which may impact your son. If they get this wrong then they will get lots of other things wrong too, are you going to correct them on everything? Their superiors/colleagues should notice and it’s up to them to deal with it.

StephanieSuperpowers · 18/01/2023 13:23

If it's not handwritten, I would suggest they consider proof reading resource material. You can bypass direct criticism of the individual in this way.

Maray1967 · 18/01/2023 13:24

I would have raised it with the head of year or subject - too embarrassing to raise it with the actual teacher. I’d be concerned that if my son knew I’d done it, it would undermine the teacher. Another member of staff needs to sit down with the teacher and point out what the correct form is.

starlingtree · 18/01/2023 13:26

Wow. Kids trusting the teacher and soaking in whatever they are given. I would raise it with the head for something like this otherwise it wouldn't get noticed.

Redebs · 18/01/2023 13:26

Yes, definitely email the HT with a screenshot.
It's ridiculous that a teacher can't write a proper sentence.

nutherwun · 18/01/2023 13:27

Ouch! Yes definitely email.

sanityisamyth · 18/01/2023 13:29

Definitely. I remember writing a piece of work in yr 7 and mentioned Downe Hall House and the teacher crossed off the 'E' and told me to watch my spelling. I was furious as SPAG is one of my strengths.

Of course not, you will sound like an absolute idiot.

What an odd thing to complain about.

Do you not think teachers should be literate and able to use the English language correctly?

I have to ask why you think this is an odd thing to complain about? You don't think using proper grammar and spelling is important?

maddy68 · 18/01/2023 13:37

I might but probably wouldn't

It’s not the OP that sounds like an idiot
