Pringles in the packed lunch

Pennecrayon · 18/01/2023 11:02

This feels like an odd question but I wanted to ask here in case I am missing something. We have a few tubes of Pringles left over from Christmas and I've been putting a few in a Tupperware for DS's packed lunch. He's 7.

Last night, I got a WhatsApp from a parent who I don't know very well to ask me if I would stop putting Pringles in DS's packed lunch because it's making her son jealous. I was a bit taken aback and I didn't respond.

I think I'm entitled to put whatever I want in my DS's lunchbox (within the rules) and that's what I want to tell her. We're new to the school this year though so I don't want to upset anyone and cause dramas.

Make sure you screen shot it. She could be a right weirdo and this could just be the start.

Ellacska · 18/01/2023 13:56

I would ignore and will put more from now !

RisingSunn · 18/01/2023 13:57

OMG she’s unhinged.

Please don’t change what you give your child because of her. If you are a pushover in this situation- what next?

She either buys Pringles too or teaches her child to be content with what they have. 🙄

I imagine she's on a budget and Pringles are expensive so they don't buy them in her house and her child is jealous because they get own-brand crisps. But messaging you like that is very weird behaviour.

One of DS's friends takes sushi to school. He's jealous. I just told him that sushi is a treat for us because it's expensive and way out of my budget.

Different people have different budgets/priorities. That's life.

We prefer Lidl version.

Don’t children trade food nowadays.

Mine apparently traded lunch items all the time. Apparently one boy was obsessed with my cheese sandwiches, his parents would only ever give him meat sandwiches so Dd would trade him 1/2 a cheese sandwich for a packet of his crisps

I used to pack them Pringles and apparently they were the prize. You could ask for any swapsy for a bunch of Pringles

Kennykenkencat · 18/01/2023 14:02

Also sushi can be just rice and seaweed. I make my own from time to time.

I wouldn’t have thought it was that expensive.

Rockmehardplace · 18/01/2023 14:02

id reply saying “my child likes them too - thats why i put them in his lunch & will be continuing to do so. Want me to put in a few extra for your son if you aren;t able to get him any?”

oohokay · 18/01/2023 14:04

@Kennykenkencat sushi rice (short grain) is expensive

AlpacaBag · 18/01/2023 14:07

She's GOT TO BE JOKING, surely!??

Llovecookies · 18/01/2023 14:08

Get on ebay and buy a pringles holder!! That would really puss her off.

BubziOwl · 18/01/2023 14:09

YABU for somehow not devouring your Pringles between now and Christmas.

But yes, the mum is weird. Ignore her.

WaddleAway · 18/01/2023 14:10

My children are always telling me about luxuries and exotic treats their classmates have in their packed lunch. I just say ‘oh that sounds nice’ and continue to pack the things that are within my budget. She sounds entirely unhinged.

MeghanThyStallion · 18/01/2023 14:11

Doesn't your son engage in lunchbox trading? I definitely used to with my friends. We'd trade what we had until we each had the perfect lunch!

This is banned at my children’s school in case of allergies.

OopsAnotherOne · 18/01/2023 14:13

If her child is jealous, she can give him some pringles too. Or if she doesn't want to, she can teach her child that sometimes some people have things that you want but can't have, and that's okay - it's a part of life.

I remember as a child being incredibly jealous that my best friend always got a fruit winder in her lunchbox but I didn't. My mum didn't like the sugar content in them, but I was too young to understand that. I was told that it simply wasn't happening, I wasn't getting fruit winders in my lunchbox no matter how much I whinged and that was that - I soon got over it!

Asking other parents to change the contents of their child's lunchbox so their own child doesn't get jealous is ludicrous. Carry on as you were OP, you're not breaking any of the school's policies and I'm certain your child is not the only one in the school with crisps in their lunchbox.

Emotionalsupportviper · 18/01/2023 14:13

Pop a lobster into his lunch box next time. See what the other kid thinks of that.

CanofCant · 18/01/2023 14:13

'Aw bless'.

I remember we also did this in school! It wasn't allowed but we were so sneaky, all "looking in each other's lunchboxes to see what they had" while secretly depositing bits of our own lunch in theirs, and vice versa. I'd completely forgotten we did this until your comment!

Dixiechickonhols · 18/01/2023 14:18

The response to a child moaning friend had something used to be ‘that’s nice for Alan’ end of conversation.
I used to envy friend with a chocolate biscuit daily. Friend’s grandma told her it was because we had a conservatory (more like a lean to but obviously seen as a frivolous addition by her grandma) we didn’t have chocolate biscuits as they were viewed by my mother as an occasional buy not for daily consumption.

Lialou · 18/01/2023 14:20

Does she not know that once you pop you can't stop? She's a tit 🤣

(a) I'm now really terrified she's on MN.
(b) I'm going to reply 'now we've popped, we can't stop'. Too good.

Please let us know what she says

courgettigreensadwater · 18/01/2023 14:25

Honestly don't even respond. It's not worth getting in to. Now I really want some Pringles 🤦🏻‍♀️

MountainChalet · 18/01/2023 14:25

I would just ignore her and carry on.

thenightsky · 18/01/2023 14:26

Have you seen the price of the little pop boxes on eBay? I'm sure I got mine free with a tube or something.

I should think there’s a very high likelihood of this being picked up by the papers so I wouldn’t worry about MN! You haven’t given any clues to her identity so it doesn’t matter - you can post for advice about any things that affect you.
Definitely not BU.
