Not so much am I being unreasonable but more how can I be reasonable?

Group holiday.

4 bedrooms:

Bedroom 1 - Double with large en-suite & whirlpool bath

Bedroom 2 - Double with ensuite

Bedroom 3 - Double with en-suite and Bedroom 4 leading off it.

Bedroom 4 - Small double off bedroom 3, no ensuite.

Attendees:

  1. Couple with toddler and baby
  2. Couple with toddler
  3. Couple
  4. Individual person.

Couple in bedroom 3 and individual in 4 particularly wanted this location and are happy with the rooms being adjoining - longtime friends, lots of history of camping and dorms/hosteling.

Per room clearly unfair to individual in room 4 paying twice as much for small room and no en-suite.

Per adult doesn’t account for less superior rooms and extra children.

How would you square this one?

Total bill is £795.

Couple with toddler and baby - 250
Couple with toddler - 250
Couple - 195
Individual person - 100

Bournetilly · 17/01/2023 19:40

Bedroom 1 £275
Bedroom 2 £225
Bedroom 3 £200
Bedroom 4 £100

FluffyYucca · 17/01/2023 19:41

I’d probably do something like:

Bedroom.1 - £295 as it’s the nicest
Bedroom 2 - £250 for the privacy
Bedrooms 3&4 - £250 between the 3 of them, maybe £100 for the single and £150 for the couple

Headoutofplace · 17/01/2023 19:41

I'd say the 3 couples all pay the same as their rooms sound roughly equal, then the single pays half what they will pay. So I'd say £230 per couple and £115 for the single (pop the extra 10 quid in the food kitty).

Sounds more than fair to me.🥇

Clariana · 17/01/2023 19:41

I would do

Bedroom 1 - Couple with toddler and baby £265

Bedroom 2 - Couple with toddler £230

Bedroom 3 - Couple £200

Bedroom 4 Individual £100

That way the three adults sharing a bathroom all pay the same (£100) each and the couples with children and better facilities pay a little more.

SerenaTee · 17/01/2023 19:42

Is there a seperate bathroom for bedroom 4 to have sole use of? If so, I’d consider that equivalent to an en-suite more or less.

I’d split it per adult so the individual pays £113 and the couples pay £226 in total. I can’t abide quibbling over money though!

I would go with this

SnackSizeRaisin · 17/01/2023 19:44

I would split it equally between adults on this occasion, as the rooms are different.

Another option is divide the total by the number of rooms +the number of adults and each person pays for the number of rooms plus adults. So a single person would pay for 2 portions. Half a couple would pay 1.5 portions.

You could weight the rooms by desirability too if you wanted to make it really complicated. Personally I wouldn't charge for toddlers and babies if they aren't taking up a bed.

Bedroom 1 - Double with large en-suite & whirlpool bath - £300

Bedroom 3 - Double with en-suite and Bedroom 4 leading off it. £150

Bedroom 4 - Small double off bedroom 3, no ensuite. £95

Total £795

This. At least £275 for bedroom 1.

It's not the same because couple 3 lose their privacy as bedroom 4 is accessed via their room. They also share their en suite.

But the OP said they were the ones that particularly advocated for this one so I have to assume that those adjoining rooms are 'worth' as much to them

Babyclb · 17/01/2023 19:50

In my friendship group we would just do all the couples paying the same, and then the single person paying less. The rooms really don’t seem that different to be adding £15 here and taking away £20 there. Just seems a bit tight to do it like that with friends.

£114 for a single
£228 for a couple.

Presumably the ones with toddlers will pay extra for food so I don’t see why they should pay more to have a toddler in their room?

DoNotGetADog · 17/01/2023 19:57

Are the couples as listed from 1-4 going in the rooms as you’ve listed them from 1-4?

Are a toddler and a baby best in the room with the whirlpool bath or could that be dangerous? Or maybe that the parents will not have the chance to use it when the couple without any children would?

Either way you suggest is really unfair to the single person. Excessively so.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 17/01/2023 20:45

I think the first response pretty much nailed it.

OneFrenchEgg · 17/01/2023 20:53

I'd just do 795/7 x 2 per couple and x 1 for the individual tbh. It doesn't sound like a massive disparity and if you all get on it's better than pricing up the added value of a whirlpool bath.
So £227 or £113.

ArthursPiesRSquare · 17/01/2023 22:46

Amazing, thank you! Always nice to have a sense check when the pressure of the maths is on you! I don’t think there’s about to be any dramatic fallout so sadly not a high drama thread!
