AIBU - Operation

Hi all,

Not really a AIBU? But I’m due to have laparoscopy, I have cysts on both ovaries/ endometriosis and my bowel has been affected. I’m due to have an operation in two weeks and I am absolutely frightened. Only 28 years old. The whole idea of being put under and questioning am I going to wake up? Etc.

I am having a surgeon with 25 years experience who has operated successfully on my sister and is a director of endometriosis operate on me and that fills me with hope for 15 minutes then I panic again 😭

Please can everyone give me positive stories and reassure me it will all be ok!!!

I’ve had two laparoscopies (Endo & fibroids)
My hysterectomy was laparoscopic. You are bound to have a few bouts of nerves, it’s only natural, but whilst this is a huge event for you, these professionals do this type of thing several (dozens?) of times a week. You will be in really, really good hands and they will look after you.

Theatre staff are amazing at putting you at ease, holding your hand whilst you drift off and looking after you in recovery. You will be fine op.

I hope all goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

It will be ok. My son had had 22 (or 23, I've lost count) general anaesthetics and he has always been ok. He is a lot braver than me though. I had to have an operation when I was an adult and I cried in the anaesthetic room Blush. The staff were all very kind and understanding though. I always tell my son that there is an anaesthetist and their assistant whose only jobs are to make sure you go to sleep, stay well during the operation and make sure you wake up again. So you will be in very safe hands.

Hiya. I've had the same op twice and yes it's a worry but if you're having a lot of endo pain you're honestly going to feel so much better. Recovery wasn't pleasant if I'm honest but get yourself some peppermint tea in (people often have shoulder pain after this surgery) and rest up as much as possible.

Haven't had your surgery, but I had two c sections. The second one had some complications and I lost a lot of blood - I didn't even realise until later when they told me and I reflected. They just calmly carried out their work and then jokingly gave out to me for being difficult on a busy day. It completely reassured me - Grey's Anatomy it turns out is a rather more high tension take on things than the reality. Grin They're just doing their job, just like me at a spreadsheet.

I'm an ODP and my job along with the anaesthetist is to put you to sleep and make sure you wake up again, which you will! This is what they do every single day multiple times. All the theatre staff are talented and very specialised in what they do so you are in very safe hands and they will be great at putting your mind at ease.

I have also had 2 laparoscopys and also 2nd the peppermint tea after, you can be full of wind after and this helps with the pain!

I actually quite like having a general. It's a good sleep! They're incredibly reassuring in the anaesthetic room before you go to sleep, and you'll wake up in recovery. You can have a brew and some biscuits then. It can make you very tired for a few days though, so don't make any major plans. I've had 7!

I had a hysteroscopy a little while back, so not a lap, but it really wasn’t a big deal. The theatre and ward staff were ever so lovely, and I had such great care. Being anaesthetised was hilarious and such a surreal experience. Just go with it.
