It's not pleasurable at all with all the costs rising?
No wonder lots of people can't afford food?
I saw a box of cereal for £4!!!!!!!!!
Anyone else dread it?

Yes go for own brand cereal. My son had a sleepover last weekend and begged for Frosties for breakfast. I hate them having them and they were about £3.50 a box! But I did allow him to get some Tesco frosted flakes for about a third of the price and they are exactly the same

EatYourVegetables · 17/01/2023 18:32

My Asda shop has gone up by 50%, without any changes.

BiddyPop · 17/01/2023 18:32

The chicken we buy has gone up from 6.99 to 8.49 in just a few weeks. Eggs have had mad hikes. And veg is going up but also constantly out of stock!

CaitCannoli · 17/01/2023 18:32

YABU very dramatic post

I shopped at Aldi last time as managed to get a lift. The fruit and vegetables didn't last very long. At Asda the carrots last ages. Was really disappointed with those things. Oh yes and foil and bin bags were cheaper sure but absolutely rubbish quality. Not worth paying less for cos I'm putting less in the bin bags and the foil tears really easily.

I feel the same about Aldi. The fruit isn't too bad but generally only get apples, oranges and grapes from there. But the veg is awful. I have never had a bag of pots from there where I haven't had to throw most of the bag away as they are bad
I find Tesco much better for fruit and veg and think like pots and carrots etc are similar in price

Burgoo · 17/01/2023 18:33

Go for own brand. HUGE price difference.

subtoprem · 17/01/2023 18:35

Staggers me every time. Own brand squash has gone up from 1.20-1.90, pasta from 55p- 95p just in a few months. We aren't far off having doubled the cost of a weekly shop in the last six months.

Fuckitydoodah · 17/01/2023 18:30

I usually buy own brand cereals etc but lately I've noticed own brand stuff always seems to be out of stock online. This is with Morrison⁩s. Anyone noticed the same with other shops online? It's annoying paying extra for branded. I don't always have a chance to get to a large supermarket in the week.

It's depressing how much it costs for so little.

Yes I said this in my post too. I shop at Asda. Online (don't drive)

UncleQuentinsWife · 17/01/2023 18:37

We have porridge. It's cheap and warm and you can put different stuff in it. I buy quick oats and do it in a Pyrex jug in the microwave. I have seeds in mine from Aldi. Breakfast topper or something it's called.

I realise that your issue isn't just what to eat for breakfast. I've just started thinking in a different way about what we eat for every meal.

dottypotter · 17/01/2023 18:13

This box of cereal was in a small Co-op.

So pretty much the most expensive place for food?

Are you able to get to a large supermarket?

I disagree but quality may vary by store. Yes, on the odd occasion I have had peppers go off too soon, but then I use the good ones and take the 3rd one back and they give me another pack of 3 for free 😂

Otherwise I find their foil and bin bags to be brilliant! I never buy the cheapest foil or bin bags from there though, I buy the dearer bin bags and foil.

No I just pretend the expensive stuff is for like GOLD CARD members in my head and look at the basics.

Flaunch · 17/01/2023 18:39

I spent 100 quid in tesco and the only meat I bought was a £8 brisket and some reduced bacon £1.40 😵‍💫

Thankfully we’re happy to eat a lot of lentils.

That's your answer then. Convenience costs money.

What else did you buy though or these is meaningless. Could have been 8 bottles of fancy champagne

CO-OP is always more expensive, because they tend to be smaller, where you can pick bits and pieces, so not really a large supermarket. If you want cheaper Lidle, Aldi and Asda are the places you need to be shopping and buy only own brand.

Flaunch · 17/01/2023 18:43

I can’t remember but it definitely wasn’t that…

Unfortunately 😂

ShaunaTheSheep · 17/01/2023 18:45

Baked beans at Lidl today:
Heinz £3.99/4
Own brand £1.29/4

I don't even like Heinz, so will try the Lidl ones.

purpleme12 · 17/01/2023 18:18

I do online. It's really increased a lot.
The thing is as well though the budget brand (Asda) are often sold out on some of the things we like to get as well!

Yes, we use asda and the budget brands do seem to be out of stock a lot. It almost feels like a bonus when they do have them. Our last shop cost a fortune even with a lot of budget amd own label products.

CantFindTheBeat · 17/01/2023 18:46

FancyPantsy · 17/01/2023 18:16

Dread it.

The cheapest cooking oil in my local yesterday was a fiver. A fiver for oil?!

I try to go to Aldi but it involves a drive a fair way away. Looks like ‘local shopping’ is out for me from now on.

I mainly buy own brand products, and I’ve still noticed a big rise in my shopping bill.

Is that for a litre, @FancyPantsy ?

I think olive oil has been £5+ per litre for a long time now.

RudsyFarmer · 17/01/2023 18:47

I dread it because there’s never any fucking food on the shelves when I go. It drives me mad. It’s such a waste of my time to go there and only get 70-% of what I went there for. I swear everyone buys the same as me as the items left and right can be there but everything I normally get, week in week our, is gone 😬

EightChalk · 17/01/2023 19:00

Bisto was £3 (for the standard sized pot, not the big one) in Sainsburys the other day. I thought I was used to the price increases but that one was surprising.

CatNutsRoastingByAnOpenFire · 17/01/2023 19:01

I wasn't pleased to see that the identical bottle of washing up liquid that was £1.20 in Morrisons was £2.00 in Waitrose. I only shop in Waitrose to get the items I can't get in Morrisons for dietary reasons and was looking for a Waitrose own brand item so noticed as I passed. Waitrose seems to be phasing itself out, so many things out of stock/not on shelves and even more overpriced than usual.

Littleguggi · 17/01/2023 19:03

My DD will only eat Weetabix minis and they are now £3.50 as opposed to the £2.50 they used to be. May not be significant but it is when you are buying a box every week!

MintJulia · 17/01/2023 19:05

YABU

Choose food that doesn't cost £4 a box. A kilo of porridge oats costs less than £1. add a few sultanas or some chopped apple, water and microwave. Fab !

I feed me and hollow-legged teen ds for £45 a week. That always includes plenty of fresh fruit & veg, decent wholemeal bread, chicken thighs, bacon, butter, eggs, cheese, pork chops, frozen fish etc. I cook from scratch, use a slow cooker a lot.

But I don't buy brands, and I've stopped buying shop biscuits etc. We've gone back to eating toast and spread as snacks instead. Much healthier, lower cost.
