To negotiate hours for a new job?

A family member of mine is applying for a part time job very similar to the one she does now. But it is 5 hours less per week so financially she will lose out. She's applying because it's got better prospects and in walking distance from her home. If she is successful with the application can she ask if they would consider upping the hours slightly? Or is this a big no? Obviously the job states the hours and salary. But one of my friends recently did the same thing and got her hours increased by 5 per week so I wondered if it was unreasonable to request this or not?

Don’t see a problem if she’s offered it. I’m currently working x hours is there any scope for additional hours. There might be overtime and additional hours in holidays etc.

Thanks it's a term time only job so literally only extra could be then.

Can she justify the additional hours? Is there something extra she can suggest she takes on? Or is she doing the same sort of job now and knows it takes longer than the advertised hours? It's fine to negotiate but she's more likely to be successful if she can back it up with a reason other than she wants more money.

Is it a school? If so, you can ask but budgets are so tight they may not be able to offer extra.

Depends how much the have allocated in the budget for their head count I would think. If they have enough float and it’s justified then wouldn’t see an issue they might be replicating the old staff members hours. No harm in asking but be prepared for them to say no as they might not have the budget for it

Depends on the sector and budget allocation. Coming to year end presumably finance depts would have approved. No harm in asking though.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 17/01/2023 07:05

She can ask but it doesn't mean they will agree. They will have a budget for this role and unless there is a need for more hours and they have the funding of course they will say no.

It's a private school.
