Feel cheated out of a job

So I applied for a full-time role, got the job. A week into the job the manager approached me saying a full-time supervisor promotion with higher pay was coming up as the current supervisor was moving into assistant manager role, so would I be interested.
I jumped at the opportunity and my boss asked me to come in in my own time for training. I came in on several occasions and was given a start date for my new position with them.
Now, without being told anything, a former supervisor has come back into her old position here, the position I was told I'd be given.
I only found this out from looking at the rota.
The manager came before I saw this and told me that she'd put me on the supervisor shift once every 10 days to cover absence, and that I could cover extra for holidays.
So it's gone from full time to once every 10 days.
I told family and friends I'd been given a promotion. I feel stupid. Every 10 days is better than nothing but it's not much.
AIBU?
It's just made me question this manager.

So the rest of the time I'll be in the role I initially got, with the supervisor shift and paid as one roughly once every 10 days.

Is it hospitality? It can be really cut throat and badly organised in that line of work (was doing this really recently).

I think that they should have told you properly instead of letting you find out by looking at the rota, but I guess they wanted someone they won't need to train in the role, so makes sense from their perspective.

It sounds very disorganised. Its it usually to work both workers and supervisor shifts? I guess nothings certain until they hadn't issued a new contract.

Sorry I can see day you are disappointed, I guess your well placed to step in when there's another vacancy.

It's really early days for you OP in your new job

I appreciate you think you might have been offered a new potential quick promotion within that first week but really you are not a tried and tested employee who has even done your induction trial period

Take it as a compliment and why would you tell your friend and family before you actually had confirmation of promotion? Confused... never do that.., keep your cards close to your chest ... Just say to family/ friends oooh they said you were good enough but there was someone who has worked for company and is more senior to you that returned and they have promotion to

It all sounds very positive that you are doing well so far so keep up the good work..! Bc you are actually stepping up already 1 in 10 days so are training ready to be a supervisor..! Wow that's amazing that's what I'd be (quietly) boasting about to family once it's all confirmed..!

Thanks, no it's not hospitality, don't want to say what industry in case outing. Luckily we've managed to arrange it to go up to one shift every 7 days now which is something. I shouldn't have taken it as spoken word when she said it but at the same time when someone tells me something like that I'm inclined to believe them.

Make sure you get it in writing that these shifts you are covering for every 7 days is paid at the higher pay rate.

Ah well that's a good learning experience OP as is the previous PPs suggestion for making sure it's recorded to are acting as shift/ team lead on those extra days and getting paid extra or getting some appreciation for it

When I was younger, I was tricked into doing the work of a lady who was off on maternity. She later swanned back into the office like she hadn't been away and took everything back over. I'll admit, I wished bad things upon her.

The promise of a promotion is an old trick of getting people to do extra work for no extra pay.

She’d only been on maternity. Of course she would come and slot right back in. She did nothing wrong.

I agree, but that system needs a mug and, on that occasion, that mug happened to be me.

I'm also perhaps slightly bitter as I was self employed when I had my kids and I worked throughout. At a slower pace, admittedly. I did fit in exams for an extra qualification though. No free money for me. If I'm not working, I'm not earning.

WhereIsMumHiding3 · 16/01/2023 19:47

Was this a name change fail for OP?

Cinammonroll · 16/01/2023 23:43

Thank you. I'll make sure that I'm paid for every shift I do at the higher rate.
I'd already completed my training and was ready to start the new role.
I wish they had better communication.
