To not contribute to a leaving collection

So this person was with the business for a long time, and left in 2019. I contributed to their leaving collection then.

Fast forward 18 months, and they re-joined the business.

They've been back 2.5 years and are leaving again shortly. A collection has been set up for them.

I don't work directly with them, they aren't in my direct team, but are in the wider team (of about 60 people). I get on with them, but we probably only chat once a month at the most, and only if we see each other on a call or in the office. They are a really lovely person.

Would I be unreasonable not to contribute to their leaving collection this time round, given they have already left the business once, and I contributed back then? Or does that feel a bit mean? If it were cash in an envelope, it would be less obvious, or I could stick a quid in. But bank transfers I always think it looks cheap to only do that. And it's obvious if you haven't contributed!

Financially things are tight at home, but not as tight as they have been in the past if that makes a difference.

YABU - you should contribute
YANBU - no need to contribute in these circumstances

Thank you!

Yanbu. Money is tight ATM for a lot of people. Bring them in a card if you want to

YANBU
a. I don't contribute to these things if I can't afford it
b. they are not a close colleague

Thank you. I'm one of those people that feels guilty about things like this, and wondered if I was right to feel guilty, or actually it's fine to say no!

If they were in my direct team it would be different of course! Also, they are very senior to me - I am one of the lowest "ranking" people in our business.

yanbu but you really should have enabled voting 😂

fruitbrewhaha · 16/01/2023 14:31

Nah, don't contribute.

I often do the teacher collection, only about half the parents give. I expect you will not be the only person not to.

I'm ok the app and can't see a button to enable voting or I would have!

I'd just tell the person who is doing the collection that due to the current economic climate you have taken the decision to only contribute towards leaving collections for your immediate team. They can't argue with that.

That sounds like a diplomatic way of saying it, rather than "I contributed last time" and sounding like a toddler 😂

There was a typo in my previous comment, it should have said I'm on the app, not ok the app!
