To sometimes wonder what my mum was thinking?

I was born in '91 to give you an idea of just how young I was.

She used to let me stay up and watch murder shows with her like Jonathan Creek and Midsomer Murders Confused I'd actually go into my primary school the next day and discuss the previous nights episode with the dinner lady who also watched MM! I have an 11yr old and I wouldn't dream of letting her watch either of those shows! She'd also record stuff like South Park and Stressed Eric etc (she watched them herself so she knew full well what they were like!) so we could watch them in the mornings.

There is a particular episode of JC that gave me nightmares for years, I man had (I think) been trapped in a cellar which flooded and he drowned. I still remember the moment they opened the door and he was at the top of the stairs with his arm outstretched, and he was all yellow and waxy looking 🤢

It's only recently that I've begun to wonder what on earth she was thinking! I'm not sure if there's even any point asking her because she'd probably get all defensive and tell me I was attacking her parenting 🙄

No, remember now. It was hostel.

And pretty much every horror film or disturbing film between 2002 and 2011

I grew up in the eighties. My mum used to go on and on about nuclear holocaust and she went into all sorts of graphic detail . I remember talking about it in school. I am probably responsible for emotionally scarring my class mates. What must the teachers have made of it? Thing is, I can’t remember anyone telling me to STFU.

As Elsa would say - let it go! Stop focusing on something from years ago that didn’t put you in any danger. Mum was trying to share something with you, maybe not perfect parenting but parenting all the same.

Crikey, I work with challenging teens and if this is as bad as it got for you then I reckon you did alright Grin

Get a grip. They are hardly Chucky, or Freddy Kruger.

Everyone watched them as kids. I would let my own kids watch them, too.

It sounds like you're getting modern day snowflake parenting where you get offended with everything, mixed up with past parenting when you all turned out OK.

I mean, you are OK? You don't have any issues apart from being slightly whiny.

I was born in 89 and watched all of these plus alot more however, my Mum didn't like me watching sunset beach 😂 no idea why but I watched in anyway.

I also suspect your 11 year old watches things you aren't aware of tbh OP I know my own 11 year old has pulled that trick already. What she didn't realise was if she'd asked I would have allowed the programme she wanted to watch.

I’m a year older than you and would stay up for MM. South Park though I remember having primary school pals that watched it and my Mum being horrified. I’m glad now, watched it once as a teen and it’s a lot of shit 😂

@CoorieIn Ooh Sunset Beach, what a blast from the past! There was a lot of sexy scenes in it from what I can remember.

CoorieIn · 29/01/2023 20:27

I must have forgotten those knonlauch I do remember being so annoyed at the last episode though. Even now it annoys me to think about 😆
