to be incensed at my neighbours' house alarm going off

we have new neighbours. We dont' speak with them because of something they did before they moved in.

They have a spanking new house alarm which, when it goes off is UNBEARABLY LOUD.

As they are out at work all day it goes on for an hour at a time before it cuts off.

What can be done about this- any ideas????

MamaG · 05/02/2008 13:38

Phone the number on the alarm and ask their advice.

southeastastra · 05/02/2008 13:39

you sure they're not being burgled?

you could offer to have a key to turn it off.

Fimbo · 05/02/2008 13:39

There is an empty house next door to me, the alarm goes off sometimes but stops after 20 minutes.

cornsilk · 05/02/2008 13:39

What did they do before they moved in? Sounds interesting!

foofi · 05/02/2008 13:41

Surely it shouldn't last for an hour? I thought all alarms had to stop after 20 mins now.

theyoungvisiter · 05/02/2008 13:41

"We dont' speak with them because of something they did before they moved in"

Please elaborate, I can't be the only person who's intrigued...?

I think the only way out of this is to talk to them and get them to get the alarm tweaked. At the end of the day though, it's causing a nuisance and the police can act eventually (although whether they will is another matter). Our neighbour's alarm is a little feisty but they are nice and apologise about it.

ConnorTraceptive · 05/02/2008 13:48

Am only interested in what your neighbours did to pee you orf - don't care about your alarm

NoMoreHighHeels · 05/02/2008 13:56

House alarms that are causing a nuisance like this can be dealt with by your local Environmental Health Dept. Any alarms should have a cut off device that activates after 20 minutes maximum (not an hour). The Council do have the power to come and disconnect the alarm (and charge the owner for the priviledge) if it's continually sounding but in this case they'd probably have a word with your neighbour telling them it needs a service and to stop causing a nuisance.

So there's the boring answer but I'm intrigued why you've fallen out with your neighbour as well....

(obviously no chance you could actually tell them their alarm is going off rather than involve a Council official is there?)

It would be a last resort and think carefully before you do this, but you can report this to the council and they can enforce some sort of noise pollution order. However, if I were you I would try to sort it informally first.

We had a situation in our old house where a neighbours alarm would ring out all night meaning we got no sleep. This went on for a few nights. The house was split into flats and rented out but the owner lived a street away and she was responsible for the alarm. She also knew it had been going off but didn't do anything about it. In the end I had no choice but to report it and the council came out and served some sort of notice on her. It did all go tits up though because someone at the council messed up and included my details in the letter. As a result I then had her banging on my door accusing me of causing trouble and costing her money (the council basically said she would be fined it it happenned again)

What did they do too annoy you before they moved in by the way? Am also intrigued!!

worley · 05/02/2008 14:13

bumping to find out what happened too!!

cocopops · 05/02/2008 14:38

Ok- its really rather dull. They bought the house and a few months after they bought it and the night before we went for a 2 week holiday, they put a neighbour notification to build an extension along our boundary- they didn't ring the bell or introduce themselves or anything that civilised people would do. We had 14 days to object so had to stay up until the small hours researching grounds for objection and putting together our objection for the planning dept.

Anyway, when we finally got the plans (they didnt bother to include them with the notification) we pointed out to them that they were incorrect as it showed them building on OUR LAND. They came round and were all nicey nicey and agreed to move the extension in by one foot. This doesn't sound a lot but it would have made a huge difference to the light blocking issue. They got their planning permission in any event, as we knew they would.

We were all happy with this until the foundations went in and it turned out they were 4cm from our boundary- so basically they lied through their teeth to us which is why we don't give them the time of day.

May sound petty but it caused us lots of anguish and will have devalued our house.
