The top things that annoy me about this are:
-apparently Emily couldn’t have just imagined the passion she wrote about, she must have experienced it
-she surely did not have sex with Willy Weightman
-her book was part of the Gondal saga and Charlotte knew that

After Frances Dormand’s portrayal of Fanny in “Mansfield Park” I’m not surprised they’re buggerising around with Emily, but really, she’s such an interesting woman just as she was, why do this?
Make a movie about a made up woman.

I think the premise of how a clergyman's daughter living in a fairly remote part of Yorkshire could write the novel "Wuthering Heights" is an interesting one. This is someone's imagining of what could have inspired her.
I don't think the majority of people watching the film believe it's actually based on real life events.
I watched with a "willing suspension of disbelief" and thoroughly enjoyed it.

OP this film annoyed me too for the reasons you state!

I've been a Brontë fan from the age of 12. I hadn't heard of this film, and won't be watching it for the reasons you describe. It would infuriate me.

mynameisnotkate · 15/01/2023 06:04

I thought it was beautiful as a film but utterly infuriating as a biopic of Emily, for the reasons you state. I also hated bossy Charlotte and boring Anne paling in comparison to Emily’s genius. They were all geniuses! You don’t have to make the others look a bit rubbish to highlight Emily’s genius. Aghh!!

ThatshallotBaby · 15/01/2023 06:29

I think unrequited passion can be more powerful than anything requited.

At least they're not trying to make her trans or non-binary!

SlaveToTheVibe · 15/01/2023 08:49

I assumed it would be that op 😂

If they struggle with the idea that a clergyman daughter in wild remote Yorkshire could write the story then they aren't in a position to be making films

Wonnle · 15/01/2023 09:28

None of these biopic films are truthful are they , they all make up "dramatic" bits .

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/01/2023 09:32

Decades ago, the infuriating nonsense peddled about the Brontes was that Branwell must have written it all before he drank himself into an early grave, and then his sisters passed it off as their own work. Angry I suppose it's an advance that it's now accepted women can write some of the most popular and lasting classics of English literature.

This - and even less that there could be three of them!

If they were three Surrey based rich brothers no one would bat an eyelid. In fact the concern would be why the other three hadn't knocked out a classic or two Confused

I watched with a "willing suspension of disbelief" and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Why did I read that and think of Blackadders "Nobody is going to see my willy suspension" ?

If "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" had been written by Dickens, laws may have changed. Luckily it was only a woman, so of no importance. Looks like it's time to take the Brontes down. Again.

America12 · 15/01/2023 17:44

I'm a big Brontë fan. I watched it knowing it had made up bits in.
I quite liked it but it wasn't deep and meaningful.

RambamThankyouMam · 15/01/2023 07:10

At least they're not trying to make her trans or non-binary!

That were my thoughts exactly.

Some scope for it too, since all three sisters adopted gender-neutral pseudonyms for their first publications and Emily's Belgian tutor had characterised her as someone who would have been better off born a man.

Columbina · 15/01/2023 18:00

I haven't seen the film, but last I heard some biographers had suggested she would be diagnosed autistic now due to her reclusive lifestyle, sudden outbursts of emotion and occasional aggressive behaviour. Not sure I agree with this view point either as i don't like the habit of posthumously diagnosing people...

LlynTegid · 15/01/2023 18:11

OP, thanks for the warning so I can give it a miss.

Anonymouseposter · 15/01/2023 18:37

I saw the film, it was pure fiction based on the characters of the Bronté family.
It was mildly entertaining but not related to reality at all.
It was actually Anne and the curate who were thought to have a crush on each other, in a very repressed way.
Emily is a very private individual and, even in her private writings there's no mention of any sexual attraction to anyone. She had a powerful imagination.

Abhannmor · 15/01/2023 19:43

Heathcliff and the Great Hunger is an interesting look at the family history - and a lot more besides.
