20 cases of cancer in firefighters linked to Grenfell tower rescue

Almost 6 years on and people are still suffering the consequences of this disgusting negligence, those poor, poor firefighters and their families. How many more cases in London will occur do to the toxic materials released into the air?

And yet still no justice, it makes me so angry.

YANBU, it’s like 9/11 - I always wondered what health issues there would be as a result of all that toxic smoke swirling about. It’s heartbreaking nobody should develop terminal cancer because of their job 😢 the government had better give some bloody generous compensation, not that it will come close to making up for it.

Druim · 14/01/2023 22:19

It’s because it mostly wasn’t white people. So that means it doesn’t really matter to many, many people in this country.

i agree wholeheartedly with your anger.

IDontCareMatthew · 14/01/2023 22:23

Is there a link to this?

StoneofDestiny · 14/01/2023 22:23

Utterly horrendous - but another Public Service we take for granted.

Not to compare and say any victim had it worse than the other, but Grenfell seems a lot scarier to me than 9/11. Obviously because it’s in the UK but also I think it’s the fact that it was caused due to a problem on a societal level…it could have been any tower block in any town or city in the country, and unlike 9/11 where stringent measures were enforced afterwards to prevent it happening again, with Grenfell absolutely fuck all has been done and millions of people are sitting ducks in ticking time bomb buildings.

Lives really don’t matter to this shit show of a govt

Is this true of the firefighters referenced or the residents? It's a bit of a generalisation to say it's purely down to race as I think social housing tenants get a bad rap, no matter what their background.

I think that profit has been allowed to triumph over building standards and peoples' health and well being, so this unfortunately will continue. Decent housing is a human right.

jaicobain · 14/01/2023 22:31

I think had it been a modern apartment complex in central London (with all apartments owned by investors), the subsequent government response would be VERY different indeed.

You what? The firefighters? I don't know what colour they were. Why are you so quick to blame everything on racism in a country and culture with gross economic inequality? Perhaps it isn't widely known that firefighters do have higher risks of cancer. Not surprising given the risks of inhalation, but they should have equipment, know the risks, and be supported appropriately.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/01/2023 22:40

And in other breaking news… water is wet.
Hate to be the one to break this news but firefighting as a profession is dangerous.
it’s not just the big events that cause it like 9/11 or Grenfell,
it’s also repeated exposure over the working lifetime.

If you go into or marry into the profession this is what you have to look forward to if you manage to to not get killed or injured in the line of duty.

Just so you know. I married into the fire service… which is why I’m intimately familiar with these facts… currently living some of them.

In other words save the outrage for grenfall or use another prop for your grandstanding.

Oh come off it. Grenfell was hardly a typical job was it?

yes i read this to bloody awful

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/01/2023 23:00

Wow… so totally missing the point aren’t you?

Let me be clear then. The things I mentioned are true for all firefighters, regardless of Grenfell or 9/11. Be outraged that it is happening every day if your concern is the firefighters and their families. Otherwise use another prop to pontificate about Grenfell, because it’s a shit thing to use FF for.

Jesus christ.

So is it wrong for people to have been concerned about the effect of the Covid pandemic on healthcare workers.

The whole point is that Grenfell was an outlying event, and could’ve been prevented if the government weren’t negligent.

I think it’s shit to use Grenfell to spoil for an argument. Do you always search for things to get into spats with people?

How am I ‘using’ FF?

Christ.

So you are using firefighters as a prop. Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Now I can file your faux outrage for firefighters where it belongs… as irrelevant and distasteful.

By all means continue…

jaicobain · 14/01/2023 23:13

I have been an occupational therapist myself and have helped various ex-public services workers with physical and mental trauma be able to perform daily tasks again.

In a roundabout way you’re saying it’s distasteful to feel sympathy for these firefighters becuase it’s what they signed up for?

Very strange viewpoint, especially for somebody who married a firefighter. Again, how is it any different to considering the effect the Covid pandemic had on healthcare workers?

Public services workers go through enough shit, hence why it’s the government’s responsibility to prevent things like Grenfell.

Why are you making me out to be some kind of leech for stating this?

Oh just fuck off, I spent 15 years as an occupational therapist working with burn victims. Don’t you fucking dare

It’s a discussion forum. What do you think I am actually trying to gain from posting this? Hardly going to get a knighthood, am I? Let’s just ban discussing public service workers at all! It’s not like they are striking (rightfully so) or anything.

Seriously… keep going with your thread. Don’t mind me over here. I’ll be sure to tell my DH about your concern for his well-being… oh wait he wasn’t at Grenfell, I guess he can fuck right off.

Haha, do one. Had your husband been in the ‘right’ area at the ‘right’ time he COULD have been at Grenfell, the worst residential fire since the war. That’s the whole bloody point.
