Long sleeve dresses for summer?

I know it's a bit early to be worried about this but after the heatwave we had last year I'd like to be prepared, my children are extremely fair and likely to burn badly. I am usually extremely careful with suncream, shade, hats etc. And so they wear the usual short sleeve/sleeveless summer clothes with me, however last year whilst under rhe care of a relative they both burned so badly that you can still see the tan line on one of daughters now!

Unfortunately I can't stop them from seeing said relative because that's up to their dad I don't get a say in what he does in his time, but I am trying to prevent as much sunburn as possible. I have long sleeve swimsuits for them but I'm struggling to find long sleeve summer dresses/tops. I'm worried about them overheating in normal long sleeve dresses in shops at the moment, can anyone point me in the direction of some cooler clothes that will protect them? Or any other advice on how to keep my children safe!

Boys or girls?

bridgetreilly · 14/01/2023 10:41

Sorry, missed where you said daughters.

NightTerrors · 14/01/2023 10:43

Both girls, they wear clothes 2-3y and 8-9y if that helps.

This is a good time of year to buy them. Just look for things in lighter fabrics.

Next have some

StarsSand · 14/01/2023 10:47

Google long sleeve linen or cotton dresses.

bridgetreilly · 14/01/2023 10:47

I really like this for your younger one. Several others in the same style too.

Meant to add- shirt dresses are good for sun protection because the collar covers part of the neck

POP do nice long sleeved cotton dresses. They are expensive but if you can pick them up in the sales, or secondhand via EBay or the like, they are worth looking at.

H&M do light cotton dresses with long sleeves.

Also Ultrasun extreme is your friend. I don't use it everyday as it's thick and irritates my eczema a bit. BUT if I know I'm going to be out all day and re application might be tricky, not a ray of UV gets through this stuff!

MintJulia · 14/01/2023 10:59

The elder is old enough to be taught to apply her own sun cream, and to remind daddy that the little one needs sun cream too.

I think I'd probably encourage that approach as well. If you get them to do it as normal routine, every day before school from April, it should help protect them.

I would just wait until the summer clothes come out. My daughter always has loads of thin cotton long sleeve dresses from places like m&s, Tesco and Asda but they won't be out yet as it's January.....

NightTerrors · 14/01/2023 11:02

@MintJulia the elder is taught to put her own on but has ADHD so isn't always the most reliable at remembering, the younger one actually does ask to have it put on. She actually had a handprint shaped white patch last year so I think it's a case of it not being applied correctly as well, but yes I will definitely be reminding him frequently this year.
