Washer dryer - 9kg/5kg wtf what do I do?

Sorry in Aibu for traffic.

Washer dryer arriving today. I love a separate tumble usually but no space.

So its 9kg wash and 5kg dry. Does this mean I must remove a significant amount of laundry post wash, if put in a full load in before drying?

Yabu - you're and idiot for not getting a dryer instead of a dishwasher

Yanbu - its fine but u should really do research before mumsnetting the day your appliance arrives

For a normal wash /dry you half fill the machine and do a 5kg wash and dry.

When you want to do a big item like a duvet or a massive load to go on the line or airer you do a 9kg wash.

Most people don't realise that even most 9kg washers without a dryer are only 9kg on a couple of cycles.

I have a washer dryer. It was new last year. Of course it is not as effective as a separate tumble dryer but it does the job. I rarely take clothes out when I put the dryer on. It can take longer when it’s full but it does dry thoroughly. You’ll be fine. And one day when you have to e apace you’ll get a separate tumble dryer.

I'm always confused by these threads, I had separate washer and dryer for years and switched to a washer dryer to make space for a dishwasher and I genuinely don't see any difference in the drying.

Maybe I've just struck lucky with my machine.

TheDogsMother · 14/01/2023 11:27

I'm on my third on over several years and love them. I use the line in summer and the airing cupboard in winter to dry clothes. I have a washer dryer for the odd emergency tumble dry and for fluffing the towels. I didn't want to dedicate valuable space to a full dryer.

Beautiful3 · 14/01/2023 11:31

I hated my washer/ dryer. I bought a clothes horse instead. When we moved and had the space for a dryer, I got one straight away. They're so much better.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/01/2023 11:38

I have one as we have no space for separates (or a dishwasher).

It is fine, do a full wash, give it an extra spin and drain, empty the machine and hang on the airer/line, anything that needs a tumble goes back in.

There are so many things that can't or shouldn't be tumbled that you need to sort it anyway. Lots of things dry quickly so there is no need to tumble it too.

I generally only use mine for thick coats, or other things that don't dry well on a line and occasionally if we need something dry quickly.

monitor1 · 14/01/2023 11:42

I'd say that unless it's towels or sheets, at least a third of what I wash can't go in the dryer anyway.

Washer dryers are a complete waste of time

I doubt that anyone, anywhere has ever regretted getting a dishwasher.

Me! I hate ours. Finally had the space to get our first dishwasher when we moved the washing machine out of the kitchen a couple of years ago. Sadly we just don’t get on with it as a family. Redoing the kitchen this year and we won’t be keeping it.

We use a dehumidifier for drying indoors but also have a tumble dryer for bedding etc in winter, otherwise everything goes out on the line.

MenaiMna · 14/01/2023 13:06

Washer dryers don't wash right or dry right. A big metal box of mechanical failure. If you want a dryer get both machines and find a space to stack them.

EyesOnThePies · 14/01/2023 13:11

I have a washer-dryer that is perfectly good at what it does.

But I only ever use the dryer function for particular towels to stop them going hard.

Too mean on the energy bills to use it for anything else, and put a clothes horse over the bath when line drying is not possible.

gingercat02 · 14/01/2023 13:24

I only ever tumble some of a full load of washing. I think lots of things shrink in a dryer.
Towels, daily underwear (not bras or nice knickers), t shirts, joggers, sports wear, socks, dishcloths, teatowels, etc go in.
Jumpers, jeans, football shirts, anything that says don't tumble dry (mostly my clothes) doesn't. DH is much less fussy than me!

Riapia · 14/01/2023 14:21

Is the 9kg dry weight and the 5kg after the wash when the clothes are wet.

PollyPut · 14/01/2023 18:39

Good luck @ExtraJalapenos

When we had a washer dryer, it was incapable of drying a double duvet cover. I hope yours is better than that. But plan washes where you can hand 4kg of it to dry. Or you'lll be doing two dry cycles per wash (assuming it does actually dry the 5kg that it claims to do)

Menora · 14/01/2023 18:44

If it is any help, the best use of my washer dryer is to dry slightly damp clothes on 30 min tumble that have hung out for 24 hours already.

so I wash clothes, hang out, wait 24 hours,
dry off fully in dryer for 30 mins which helps reduce creases and just gets them fully dry and soft

I don’t have space for both either and condensers take AGES and you have to halve the load
