To help my 12yo vomit

She has obviously caught a stomach bug from her sis and knows she needs to vomit but can't. Reluctant to show her how to make it come but think it would help.

I wouldn't

page1of4 · 13/01/2023 20:44

I'd just leave it, it's in the post. Not pleasant but I wouldn't be showing her how to purge

44PumpLane · 13/01/2023 20:44

I think it would be a bad idea, not least because if her body needs to get rid of the contents of her stomach then it should manage naturally.

Rainallnight · 13/01/2023 20:44

Nooooooo, I wouldn’t be helping a teenage girl learn how to induce vomiting.

Get her something OTC, encourage her to sleep

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 13/01/2023 20:45

OTC?

Why would she need to vomit? If it's a stomach bug can't see why it would.

If you really think she would feel better after though ask her to go crouch over the toilet if she thinks she might be about to throw up... there's usually a little bit of an odour or association that pushes me over the edge when queasy!

Sparklesocks · 13/01/2023 20:47

If it’s a stomach bug, even if she feels brief relief from vomiting once she will likely be back to feel awful again a few minutes later. They’re a nightmare but all you can do is ride through.

hbvf · 13/01/2023 20:47

I wouldn't, however maybe try downing a big glass of water? Can induce vomiting and won't harm her if not? Hope she feels better soon!

Babyclb · 13/01/2023 20:49

No one ‘doesn’t know how to vomit’ if she was bad enough she would just be sick. She’s nauseous but I wouldn’t teach her to make herself sick.

Exactly this. Babies manage it after all.

Xrays · 13/01/2023 20:50

If it needs to come up it will.

FrownedUpon · 13/01/2023 20:51

God no, don’t do that. Her body will deal with it in it’s own way.

Ludo19 · 13/01/2023 20:52

No you're body knows naturally to start retching if she needs to be sick, then she will.

This in spades.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/01/2023 20:53

No, no, no.

youshouldnthaveasked · 13/01/2023 20:53

Please don’t. It will happen when it needs to. Sometimes I feel sick for a while before it happens. I’ve never been able to make myself sick

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 13/01/2023 20:55

No, don't do that. If she needs to be sick she will be, forcing it isn't going to help her feel better, it'll probably make her feel worse.

TellMeWhere · 13/01/2023 20:55

A glass of water or a nibble on an apple or similar might produce results, but if it's a bug she may still feel shitty after puking anyway so I'd be inclined to leave it and attempt sleep. The body is pretty good at knowing what to do.

I wouldn't be teaching anyone how to shove their fingers down their throat, no. It's not something I do as an adult either Confused

DuchessofSandwich · 13/01/2023 20:55

If she's almost there a glass of water (one) can help it come out. If it doesn't then the body is not ready so leave it.

Lovemusic33 · 13/01/2023 20:57

Actually……no one needs to vomit.

I think you are being extremely unreasonable. As someone who is petrified of vomiting I would hate anyone to suggest that I make myself sick. No one actually needs to vomit, it’s just a feeling and it’s one some of us can control. For me I would rather wait for it to make its way out the other end (and it will if it’s a bug). I managed to survive salmonella without vomiting, I didn’t need to vomit, it didn’t make me I’ll for longer although I was very unwell. If she has a bug believe me it will make its way out the other way if it needs too.

swapcicles · 13/01/2023 21:02

I'm not a sicky person but if I need to be sick then there's no stopping it, I can make myself sick quicker but that's it.
If you're properly ill you can't hold it back and neither should you.

darjeelingrose · 13/01/2023 21:03

I don't even understand why you would be considering this. Are you confusing a stomach bug with food poisoning? That's the only possible explanation.
And no, clearly, you shouldn't do that, aside from being pointless, it's a terrible idea.

thats not true, if humans didn’t need to vomit, we wouldn’t be able to. And in animals who can’t vomit (horses for example) the inability to do so can make them very seriously unwell.

glasgowlass · 13/01/2023 21:07

If her body needs to eject the contents of her stomach, it will do so naturally.

Do not show her how to do this on purpose for so many reasons.
