To think that energy suppliers are CFers

So we are all pretty familiar now with the rogues and scammers that entered the energy market, went bust and had to be bailed out at taxpayers expense. But I am now talking about the big boys that still remain in the market. My small supplier, Go To, went bust and we were shunted onto Shell. Direct debit, for both gas & electricity went from £130 a month to £290.
like most, we have introduced various saving measures to reduce consumption (more loft installation, closing off rooms, turning down thermostat, running appliance in middle of night when tariff is reduced, etc). We are consistently and substantially in credit, even after December’s cold snap.
So I get an email last week proposing that my direct debit is raised to £405 a month. This is based on some totally bogus algorithm. I did the math. They are wrong.
So I then had to phone them, be put on hold the usual 45 min, and tell them “no, you are not raising my DD, thank you very much”. They backed down.
My AIBU is the time wasting necessary to stop them from ripping me off, plus my concern that the more vulnerable ( and less numerate) members of the public that will acquiesce in the face of these tricks.
Boils my piss.

I'm very happy with Octopus as they haven't proposed a stupidly high direct debit amount. Its high but not stupidly high!

I'm also happy with Octopus. The direct debit they recommend is reasonable and their prediction tool revises it with each bill. I can change it myself online as well.

Ovo regularly advise where our direct debit should be. It’s literally a few pounds increase or decrease depending on the time of year and credit I assume. They don’t change it but it’s usually a month or two, then if you don’t act/contact they then increase it. That’s only happened once. As mostly I’ve agreed it’s an ok suggestion. Never had a crazy suggestion in 5 years. Also been able to access credit back too.

Don't know... Shell just told me we were being increased to £251 a month... on their website you can reduce it yourself by £50 so I did that as seemed a little high and we are in credit a few hundred pounds with them. I think the £201 direct debit sounds reasonable for what we are spending now.
