I shouldn't apply for jobs with hours I don't want ...

Hi all
I've been job hunting for ages. I see a few jobs that I'm interested in but a lot of them are full time and I can't afford full time nursery and after school club so would ideally want a part time post.

My point is. I have been told by quite a few people (even Jobcentre staff) to still apply for these jobs and if/when I get an interview or offer that I should say what hours I want to do and if they like me enough they will negotiate

IMO I don't feel comfortable doing this because I feel like Im wasting the recruiters time.

What do you think? Has that ever worked for you?

I've been advertising positions and have stressed we need people who can work upto 5pm, I already have enough staff covering school hours. I'm getting increasingly annoyed by bringing people in for interview who only want to work school hours despite saying initially they have the full availability. It doesn't matter how much I like them at interview, I can't offer the hours if they can't do the hours I need.

Imo school hours jobs are the holy grail, anyone who finds one tends to keep it, but certain industries physically need staff in place upto close so no matter how good someone is if they can't do the required hours then they won't be employed!

Yes, my post was full time but I asked if there was a possibility that I could work part-time and they agreed. This was agreed because the other candidate preferred part time too so we did a job share. I now work full time as my children are older and the other lady left her position so I was given first refusal x

Good Luck x

In many jobs this is normal .
also employers are desperate for good workers. Often you can call the shots or at least ask .. its an adult to adult negotiation not cheeky.
like me dd was offered 23 k for her job .. she negotiated salary to 25 k .
its quite normal to ask at least.
also if it is a professional type of job .. i did this with mine and found a job share .. they had to give a good reason why we cdnt jjb share as we gave continuity in the role.

@lanbro I agree. Also dislike the suggestion that wfh is the answer - in my experience that means the employee is still missing around school hours but is getting paid as if they were there, and not making that time up due to children’s bath time/homework/tea/bedtimes etc.

@Emmalou0607 That sounds utterly horrendous and made me thank God I no longer work in a call centre. Is the idea behind it that it motivates everyone to work harder? Because even if everyone is doing really well, someone will always be last and then that’s their reward for working hard?!

@Oysterbabe hahaha that's excellent.
Well done and congratulations ONYJ!

Absolutely. Jobs in my industry are almost never advertised at part time so I always apply for full time roles and negotiated after I’ve been offered the job.

Yeah just don't apply
There's nothing more irritating than interviewing (and really liking) someone who applys for a full time job then announces they only want part time hours.
At our place we don't do time shares etc

I appreciate this is at least partly because my industry has a real recruitment crisis, but I don't go into an interview nervous and ready to bend over backwards to impress. It's them who need to convince me they're a company worth working for. Any decent company will consider flexible working requests.
