Travel cot question

Posting here for traffic.

Dd is struggling with the transition from next to me crib to cot (wooden cot with bars). She's nearly 10 months so already been in the next to me a bit too long probably. I have been advised to try a travel cot as an interim solution as it's similar to the next to me in terms of the mesh sides. I keep finding conflicting info online however about how suitable a travel cot is for prolonged use. Some people say it's fine, others say there isn't enough spinal support. I've ordered one with a thick mattress and I'm hoping it'll be ok? Does anyone have any advice?

As long as you buy a proper mattress I would say it is no difference really.

Do you know it is the bars causing her to not settle though? Or is it just the change to a bigger sleep space, possibly own room etc?

We used one for 6 weeks when we moved abroad and were waiting for the shipping container with the furniture to arrive. I’ve never heard that they’re not ok for prolonged use. Baby is now 5 and doesn’t have a weird shaped spine or anything! I have to say though, blaming the cot bars for bad sleep sounds a bit like clutching at straws though! Hopefully you’re right though, it would be a nice easy fix.

DD refused to sleep in her Moses basket after about 3 weeks & was in a travel cot until 6 months & she was/is fine.

I don't think we changed the mattress either but I didn't read anything online beforehand, we just wanted her to sleep!

I bought a thicker mattress when we took ds2 on holiday and he was v little. I just wanted to try and help him feel comfier and therefore settle better. If you could do that, I think more prolonged use would be more pleasant for you and your baby.

Get a travel cot mattress- usually around £20
sleeping on the hard mattress that comes with a travel cot isn’t recommended for prolonged use

The travel cot I bought stated it was suitable for longer term use and had a separate mattress you could purchase for that purpose. I can't remember what cot it was but it was one of the major brands

Chuck the mattress from the barred cot into the travel cot? So long as the base is strong enough it shouldn't be an issue.

Is it about not being able to see you / being in her own room now that is more of an issue? as I'm assuming you've gone straight to the lower base with the barred cot given she's 10 months and presumably sitting if not standing so high base is dangerous for her.

It won't be the right size or shape. It's important you get the right mattress to fit the cot as any gaps the baby could slip down could be dangerous

Yeah the mattress from the cot would be too big I think. It probably is because of the change of environment too - I.e out of our room and into her own and in a new bed too. She just screams and screams even when I put her in there to play. I have no problem keeping her in with us for a bit longer, it would be easier for me. However the wooden cot is big and heavy and probably wouldn't fit in our room whereas I think a travel cot will just squeeze in.

www.shnuggle.com/products/shnuggle-air-bedside-crib

you need the converter to turn the bedside crib into a cot but they were amazing!!

no bars to knock their hands when they slept was a bonus!!
