Taxed at 40% for a part time job

I've been working for a few agencies in casual roles, but I'm changing to one permanent job now because I'm sick of being taxed too much and it's confusing splitting tax between various jobs, it no longer seems worth it.
For instance I have a job which is a casual school role of 7 hours per week. I'm paid about £14.50 an hour and I've just been paid £123 net from £250 ish gross. Been put on a DO tax code which I'd never even heard of. Just makes me think what's the point really. Would I be able to get this money back? Is it ever worth working in several different roles?

you can get it back at the end of the tax year, depending on your final annual income and if it's less than the 40% tax threshold. Lump sum from the tax man.

My annual income is around 22k. Thanks, I'll phone them today and try to sort it.

You can usually use your personal tax account to inform HMRC online of your expected earnings in various jobs, which they then use to generate your tax code. Might be worth a look if you struggle to get through on the phone.

It all works out in the end, it’s just that it feels psychologically shit to be on a zero code and not take home so much from a specific job! You pay the same amount of tax overall if you earn £50kpa from one job or 5 jobs it just comes back as a lump sum from the taxman at the end. I’ve done a mix of employed and self employed for years and some of my PAYE was at zero codes at my request so I knew I’d always paid all the tax on it.

You’re still better off than if you weren’t doing the second job. And the faffiness of having different jobs might be the trade off of having more flexibility or diversity of work. That’s why I liked it. Now I just work full time with extra jobs on top 😩🤣
