Bluewaterbottlebig · 13/01/2023 09:28

So been mad stressed since the summer
building work going wrong
costing loads and non stop stress
mess hassle etc

as a result of this I’ve had bad bad insomnia and generally stressed
never been like this before

anyway asked for diazepam for given 14x 2mg
so have to take 3 to get any effect to help me sleep

so that’s only 4 and a half doses

so in 6 months I’ve only had 8 doses
but it’s massively massively helped
and I don’t get any side effects from it

dr did give me 14 zopiclone but I get bad side effects
Brain zaps
and feeling wired and feeling horrible in general and v v dry mouth
i still have about six of these to take as gave up on them
due to how horrible they make you feel

I've done all the good sleep hygiene practices
bath milk no screen time before bed
already don’t read the news at night
avoiding stress as much as I can

but I know this is a temporary situation
but I need help getting through the next few weeks
as the lack of sleep is making me unable to function properly

bit the dr os refusing to prescribe me anymore diazepam but I’ve only had it prescribed twice to me in six months
2 lots of 14 x 2mg tabs
Which having to 6mg to get any effect to sleep works out to 9 doses !!!

the dr won’t prescribe me anymore
so aibu

i desperately need sleep and these doenst cause me side effects
even if I could only take it once or twice a week it would be such a relief

I’m also been trying loads of other complimentary treatments too
massage etc and I’m booked in to try acupuncture
reflex only

please help
cant function properly without sleep and I’ve tried all the otc sleep stuff too

Ask him for some melatonin.

GPs can't prescribe this

EmmaEmerald · 13/01/2023 10:09

someone else posted with the same problem and I agree OP

i can't get zoplicone either

i can only sympathise

you could try amitryptaline?

GameofLifer111 · 13/01/2023 10:10

@Waitrise it increases serotonin which helps take the edge of anxiety. It's helped my mood and stopped palpitations (similar effect to propranolol 80m

5 HTP - Holland and Barrett

lifeinthehills · 13/01/2023 10:12

I sympathise but your doctor is right. They haven't refused to give it to you, they're just limiting the amount. It's so very addictive. You need a longer term solution.

Bluewaterbottlebig · 13/01/2023 10:14

I would think about taking 5 HTP
move not heard this affects dry eyes ?

I would also try amitryptaline but I’m worried about my eyes

Bluewaterbottlebig · 13/01/2023 10:14

But also lack of sleep can’t be helping my eyes either

Stress and insomnia are possible indicators of peri menopause, do you think it could be related to that? If you look through the symptoms (lots available online) you might find that you need to look at the underlying cause, not just the symptoms. On that, you do need to look at your stress triggers and see how you could reduce them impacting you like this.

ilovesooty · 13/01/2023 10:16

I used to work in substance misuse and have lost count of the consultations I've sat in with clients pleading for benzos. There are strict prescribing guidelines around diazepam for good reason.

Bluewaterbottlebig · 13/01/2023 10:16

I still have about 6 zopiclone so I could try then next week if totally desperate
Just worried about the effect on my eyes

they certainly cause dry mouth

Nytol - one a night - from the chemis - works a treat

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/01/2023 10:19

Melatonin is only licensed for over 55.

You neex a low dose sedating antidepressant. Amitryptiline, Mirtazapine or Trazadone.

Hbh17 · 13/01/2023 10:22

I don't understand why any lay person would think they know more than an experienced, qualified medical professional. The doctor in this case would have been doing their job and acting in the best interests of the patient.

Lilbunnyfufu · 13/01/2023 10:24

GameofLifer111 · 13/01/2023 09:50

Amitriptyline knocks me right out. Have you tried this @Bluewaterbottlebig - just 20mg does the trick for me!

(But I also have neurological problems too!)

Amitriptyline works for me to my dose is 50mg knocks me out within minutes.
I'm not taking it at the moment cause I wouldn't wake up for my 8 week old if I did.

LadyWithLapdog · 13/01/2023 10:25

When will the building works finish? What will be the next thing to stress you out? You need to find better ways of managing stress long term.

bluetongue · 13/01/2023 10:25

I think people are being a bit harsh on the OP.

I’ve suffered from insomnia since primary school. Can remember school camps and sleepovers and being the only person still awake at 3am. My mum also suffers from insomnia and I believe there’s some evidence now that it can be inherited.

When I have a bad bout it impacts every aspect of my life. Often I’ll sleep less and less every night until I have a night where I don’t sleep at all. It’s torture. Temazepam is the only thing that will break this cycle of insomnia when it’s this bad. Sometimes I’ll use over the counter restavit but it gives me a hangover. I have no side effects from the temazepam.

GPs can't prescribe this

They can my DD (15) gets it from our gp. It was recommended by camhs and our gp prescribes it.

DD has to have regular health checks every 3 months since she started taking it and she has 6 month reviews to check it's still suitable. It's not easy to get on preciption though was only prescribed once camhs recommended before that go used to give antihistamines but they didn't work for DD.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/01/2023 10:35

Gp’s can prescribe for under 18 if it comes from secondary care.

Its only licensed for over 55 for gp to prescribe without external input.

jannier · 13/01/2023 10:35

Gp is right you need to sort your anxiety ....have you tried excercise it raises your hormones and helps you relax.

Nosleepforthismum · 13/01/2023 10:37

Another one for suggesting exercise! Ideally in the morning and make sure it’s tough. A tired body will usually override a tired mind 🤞

Noonesperfect · 13/01/2023 10:37

If you can afford it, you could see a private consultant / doctor as they are not constrained in what they can prescribe in the same way as an NHS GP. Also they might have other suggestions. NHS Psychiatrists also are allowed to prescribe way more Diazepam than a GP. Hope you find something that helps OP.

tulips27 · 13/01/2023 10:38

I'm surprised they gave you 2mg, I had 1mg once and was knocked out by that.

Very sorry you are going through this, insomnia definitely makes life difficult to lead.

I used melatonin that I ordered from mainland Europe, although you say that didn't work for you.

Have you given up caffeine?

Herbie0987 · 13/01/2023 10:40

When stuck in a bad sleep cycle I use Nytol for a couple of nights to break the pattern, I also have dry eyes and it’s never made it worse. I used to use the App Headspace(free version) just before bed the voice and the concentration before bed helped a lot. I still get bad nights and use the slow breathing to calm me down.

Summerlark · 13/01/2023 10:40

I have seen somebody in the grip of an addiction to diazepam. It was not pretty. The doses get ineffective pretty quickly and it just goes into a spiral of increasing doses of all sorts of things. The person eventually got off them. I still don't know how her child didn't have PTSD for what her mother put her through.

tulips27 · 13/01/2023 10:42

Sorry, I have just googled diazepam dosages and it seems 1mg isn't prescribed so I must be misremembering that, just ignore what I said about that please.

glasshole · 13/01/2023 10:43

Just get carbomer eyegel for your eyes. Apply right before bed and wear a 3d sleep mask or goggles to retain the moisture and take phenergan.
