To ask walkers for boot recommendations

NewDayNewBeginnings · 12/01/2023 22:44

I walk the dog daily and I'm going through walking boots every few months. They start off great, but after a few months they start taking on water and by the time I get home, my toes are wet, cold and wrinkly. Can anyone recommend a boot that lasts a decent amount of time?

I have a pair of Scarpa boots that have lasted nearly 20 years

Gemmanorthdevon · 12/01/2023 23:19

Another vote for Scarpa here, 10 years and mine are still solid..

TonTonMacoute · 12/01/2023 23:22

Meindl, but they are pricey.

ColdHandsHotHead · 12/01/2023 23:24

Lowa. I've had two pairs and they are fab.

Kbear · 12/01/2023 23:26

I had north face but no way are they waterproof - comfortable but even let water in when walking through grass

Just bought berghaus boots (so did DH) and what a difference in quality, comfort , support and they are completely waterproof

If you do long walks you know what's important! Worth paying for

CoQ10 · 12/01/2023 23:27

In the wet weather I would personally go for really good quality wellies. Mine are lined, very warm and very supportive. They aren't cheap but they've lasted.

Aigle Parcours.

I use walking boots from Meindl for mountain walking in Wales and elsewhere where the terrain is tougher and you need something more sturdy.

BoringLittleMe · 12/01/2023 23:28

Brasher women's, here. Lightweight and the waterproofing is great!

Worth a read.

DP loves his Scarpa and I'm happy with my Meindl.

Both have lasted us years. You definitely get what you pay for when it comes to walking boots.

Streamside · 12/01/2023 23:36

I've had a Berghaus pair for at least 12 years, they're still completely waterproof.Blundstone are also great but more of a Chelsea boot style.

JauntyRedShoes · 12/01/2023 23:38

Keen leather walking boots. I have wide feet and get the mens. I walk regularly and find them to be comfortable, waterproof and long lasting. I do get the mud off them every time and put dubbin on every so often.

DoNotGetADog · 12/01/2023 23:38

I love Meindl. I’ve had 3 pairs in the last 20 years, but I’ve only changed them due to my feet changing size! I find them really comfortable (and I find most shoes really uncomfortable!)

Thesonglastslonger · 12/01/2023 23:49

I wear Scarpa boots. Bought them in 1999. Still waterproof.

stripeymonster · 12/01/2023 23:49

Merell leather boots were really comfortable right out the box.

NorthernAndSouthern · 12/01/2023 23:59

All those recommending Scarpa and Meindl, how much did you pay?

How much should I expect to pay for a decent pair?

NewDayNewBeginnings · 13/01/2023 12:51

Thanks for all the recommendations..I'm definitely thinking I need to spend a bit more than my usual £40 ish. I just worry about spending over £100 and them still letting water in. I shall do some more research on the ones recommended... And then splash out... Thanks

Where’s the water coming in?
via the lace holes / tongue or through the material itself?

if it’s the former you could wear gaiters to stop that.

Waterproof walking boots seems a touch excessive unless you’re also goin* to use them in the hills.

alternatively, waterproof socks?

jackstini · 13/01/2023 12:59

Berghaus or Merrell - both last ages and very comfortable

jackstini · 13/01/2023 13:01

Merrell have a good sale every Jan so a good time to look!

lovemelongtime · 13/01/2023 13:01

Had two pairs of merrell , both leak. But Colombia walking boots are great

GasPanic · 13/01/2023 13:04

Really depends on what you are walking in. I walk through mud in gore-tex berghaus boots every day and they are fine and stay dry. But the mud doesn't go in over the tongues (flat bits on top of the foot where they lace up). The soles are still good on those boots after 20 years of walking in them (viton rubber maybe).

I think if you are going in the wet, and the entire part of the foot part of the boot is immersed you can have the best quality boots in the world but water will still get in around the tongue.

If you are immersing your feet completely in water you really are probably better off using wellies when its very wet, and getting good quality walking boots for when it is wet/muddy but you are not completely immersing the boot.

mozzyworries · 13/01/2023 13:07

For the wet weather I wear Dunlop neoprene lined wellies which keep my feet warm and dry.

These are the ones I have: www.millets.co.uk/15899728/dunlop-blizzard-winter-boot-15899728

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 13/01/2023 13:10

Can you redo the waterproofing on the ones you have with nikwax? Where’s the water coming in from?

NewDayNewBeginnings · 13/01/2023 13:31

I think it's coming in from the bottom mostly.. mainly I'm walking in woods, so muddy with lots of puddles.. I know when I have to go in a flooded area and the water goes over the shoe... Then I will get wet feet. Luckily that doesn't happen often.

Waterproof socks.... Is this a thing? I must Google
