I have a relative who does this and it drives me up the wall but can't think of the name for what it is called.

She send me a message that goes like this:

Her: I'm in the hospital
Me: What happened?
Her: My throat was swelling
Me: So what is going on?
Hours pass and another vague reply
Her: Don't know
Me: Are you home now? What did the doctor say?
Her: Need more tests.
Nothing else just that.

Then I have to ask question after question to get any information.

Anyway, what is it called when people do that and is there anyway to stop it?

Attention Seeking?

ChimChimeny · 12/01/2023 17:12

Attention seeking or they don't want to actually tell you. Either way I'd stop asking because I

Being annoying or being deliberately vague as they don't want to tell you and you're being nosey.

It’s called “evasive” and “attention seeking” (or, as we’re now supposed to say “affection harvesting”). This person clearly wants you to worry - if they weren’t in a position to tell you what’s actually going on/what they need then there was no purpose to messaging you at all.

OP isn’t being nosey. Those are very normal questions to ask. If someone told me that they were in the hospital then of course I’d immediately ask them what’s wrong and if they’re ok. If they didn’t want me to discuss it then why would they bring it up?

I hate this kind of thing. I would simply reply "oh no, sorry to hear that, tell me all about it". Then wait, and don't reply again till you've had the full story.

Drip feeding, being obtuse, being very annoying. Don't pander to it, I would just give a thumbs up.

That is the best response.
I don't know why I still get upset over it as she's done this for years.
I'll remember that for the future and just respond like that and then put it out of my mind.
