2023 off to a tough start… it’s not going to get better is it?

Sorry for a moan but I worked in the tech industry and was part of a big redundancy/restructure this week. I was terminated immediately with a huge number of my colleagues.

so… it’s not unexpected, tech is not doing well right now… look at twitter, Amazon, Meta etc.

I am planning to return to my old sector. I’m hearing of redundancies there too, which is almost unheard of. I’m quite shocked. It’s in a bit of a mess too.

im sorry we aren’t even two weeks in to new year and I already feel pissed off. Strikes, cost of living, the absolute state of the NHS. COVID, strep A…

shops and cafes Closing everywhere. I’m exhausted already. It just all feels shit already.

I have a feeling this year will be the worst of them all. It’s a real mess out there.

Maybe next year when the bastard tories are voted out.

Thanks for sharing your perspective and sorry to hear about your job loss.

But your perspective isn’t called “2023”. Is it.

2023 isn’t shit. It’s your life that’s not great.

You’re then conflating that in a big ball of misery with other people’s challenges (strikes, health service etc) which is fine, but that’s discrete from your problem.

I hope you find work, and perspective, not necessarily in that order.

Notstrongenough · 12/01/2023 13:31

I agree it is all doom and gloom even the weather seems worse than ever !
I think the media makes it worse though - always worst case scenario, sensationalising and catastrophising -

MaryMcCarthy · 12/01/2023 13:34

Something to your advantage is there are LOADS of job vacancies at the minute across numerous sectors. I don't know anyone who's been out of work for very long in recent times.

Things are going to get worse before they get better nationally though. There are going to be a lot of unwelcome mortgage renewals this year reducing the money in people's pockets.

Unemployed1 · 12/01/2023 13:34

The obvious solution for people like… retrain.

God knows we could do with carers and nurses etc. but I simply cannot afford it. The training or the pay. Not to mention the nhs is in such a state here that our nearest big hospital is over 40 mins away.

I gotta live here in this tiny house because I can’t afford to move, so can’t even relocate for work. And I have kids that I need to get back to at 6pm (can’t afford more childcare)

Blimey. Some people just can’t empathise and are determined to have a dig

This year we literally had the hottest day since records began.

There were something like 3,200 excess deaths over the summer.

Would you rather the media didn't mention it?

Unemployed1 · 12/01/2023 13:37

I know some of you are right it’s not all doom and gloom. I have wonderful kids and a great family. Just on this rainy January Thursday whilst I sit suddenly unemployed, it all feels a bit much!

Redundancy is tough. It’s on the cards in my current company pretty soon and I know how it makes you feel. How old are you if you don’t mind me asking?

Unemployed1 · 12/01/2023 13:38

I’m 40 very soon! Happy birthday to me

🎉

I was made redundant at 40. Almost 10 years ago now. I know it feels tough to not be needed, and it’s a shock to the system as you’re so used to having a purpose and a routine.

I will say it gets better. I enjoyed a break and unwound, then got going again career wise. I, and everyone I know, looks bavk and no one says it was a bad thing.

can you afford a break or are you under pressure to get a new job quickly?

Wishiwasatailor · 12/01/2023 13:42

could you retrain in another area of tech? Cybersecurity is expanding rapidly and there are lots of free bootcamp training around at the moment

Theunamedcat · 12/01/2023 13:48

I've got to say I've had better year starts two weeks in and I'm like please don't start as you mean to go on!

Unemployed1 · 12/01/2023 13:52

When I say I worked in tech. Im not a software engineer etc. It was more on the sales/strategy side of things. Im not sure I could retrain. Or even if I want to remain in the sector.

Do you feel better for putting the boot in??

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 12/01/2023 14:36

Yanbu at all. This is the year we'll see the tory asset stripping turned up to the max, as they do everything they can to transfer as much public wealth into private pockets before they're kicked into touch at the general election in 24.

Unfortunately, I think they'll have done so much damage by then the UK may never fully recover.

So on the positive side, that experience is readily transferable to other industries so you’re not in any way tied to tech.

if you can, take a breath, step back, wait, then go again. You got this :)

Devoutspoken · 12/01/2023 15:39

There are still.loads of jobs in the tech industry and lots of businesses are still doing very well
