Nothing, but now I have your attention.

Has anyone got a yoghurt maker? Are they worth it if you get through a lot of yoghurt?

Sorry to put it in this section but nobody else will answer me in products.

LMAO.

You can make natural yogurt really easily at home you know. Just need a pan, cooker and somewhere warm like an airing cupboard.

Oh and milk of course.

lazarou · 05/02/2008 09:03

I don't like yoghurt either but the kids eat loads of it.

So there

OP posts:
dal21 · 05/02/2008 09:04

well then buy one - if you dont like it, stick it on ebay.

lazarou · 05/02/2008 09:08

WEll, I don't want to buy one and then not end up using it because it is too much trouble.

I have a pasta machine sitting unused in the cupboard. Thanks a bunch Jamie Oliver!

So, am I just going to have to make it by hand? Am a bit reluctant as I seem to be able to not follow nice easy recipes or methods.

I had one and it was fun! not sure it ever saved any money or made particularly good yoghurt, but it kept me happy. Maybe do the sums over a year or something, it might be cheaper - you can make massive batches of it, so it probably does work out cheaply eventually.

bran · 05/02/2008 11:39

I had one, it was a bit too much effort tbh. It's much easier and about the same price to buy large tubs of natural yogurt from the supermarket and mix in your own flavourings.

ComeOVeneer · 05/02/2008 11:40

I have one (from lakeland) it is easy to use and we make all different flavours, the kids love helping make it and eat tonnes.

CaptainCod · 05/02/2008 11:40

faeks

ComeOVeneer · 05/02/2008 11:45

this one.

Why are we freaks? Just because I like to know what is in the food I am eating. I make my own most things (bread, pasta, mince, sausages etc.)

lazarou · 05/02/2008 16:11

Oh, I like the look of that one. Do I also need an ice cream maker? Would that be a bit extravagant?
The pasta machine looks a bit menacing, like a mangle.

I so want an icecream maker. DP is thrilled with the concept, obviously.

BadKitten · 05/02/2008 17:14

I love my yogurt maker. Its a lakeland 1 litre 1 container one - we get through loads of yogurt and it used to cost us a fortune. Now its costs us the price of 1 carton of UHT milk every 5 days, plus a bit of fruit or whatever for flavouring and one small pot of yogurt to restart with a new culture every 6 weeks or so. So maybe £1 - £2 a week?

FillyjonkisCALM · 05/02/2008 17:16

use a thermos. its exactly the same.

oh and no you don't save money. But the yoghurt CAN be nicer..

less packaging too, i suppose

jeremyspants · 05/02/2008 17:17

You can make yoghurt in a thermos flask.

NineUnlikelyTales · 05/02/2008 17:19

I used to have a yoghurt maker when I was student but it made really rank yoghurt and I just felt too 1970s. And then I remembered I don't really like yoghurt that much.

jeremyspants · 05/02/2008 17:19

Duh! Did not read Filly's posting before pressing post.

ComeOVeneer · 05/02/2008 18:06

I don't use the easyyo (or whatever it is called). My sister gave me a culture youghurt from her lot and I started from there. I also have an icecream maker, a mincer with sausage making attatchment, pasta maker, cornish pasty crimper, breadmaker, god I feel a kitchen gadet shop coming on

MrsMattie · 05/02/2008 18:08

You tore me away from my ranting SAHM vs WOHM thread for yoghurt making? I should empty a past it's sell by date pot of fromage frais on your head for that.
