To be embarrassed

Mmmy · 11/01/2023 12:32

Just been in the shop and as I was putting a peach lemonade drink on the conveyer belt, it felt off the edge. Was glass so smashed on the floor. Everyone stared and someone shouted oh dear.

all the shop assistants gave me a dirty look and one said ‘that’s just what we need’. I presume having a bad morning. But I felt really embarrassed and it was an accident obviously. Aibu

These things happen don't sweat it

Emmamoo89 · 11/01/2023 12:32

No you're not being unreasonable. I think the people who made the comments are. It was an accident x

SpinningFloppa · 11/01/2023 12:35

I had worse, I was in a corner shop and a guy asked me to pass him a drink as I was by the fridge and he was at the till, I grabbed it and as I did the whole flipping shelf of bottles fell down!! The guy didn’t even say thank you and I was left to pick them all up like an idiot, next time I will pretend I didn’t hear 😣

Honeyroar · 11/01/2023 12:37

The shop assistants were really out of order saying “that’s just what we need” in front of you. It wasn’t as if you’d done it deliberately. I dropped a milk bottle in our local shop recently. I was mortified. The shop assistant said don’t worry, accidents happen, wouldn’t let me clean it up myself and wouldn’t let me pay for it. I did an online review of the shop and raved about the staff.

RubyPip · 11/01/2023 12:37

Those comments won't be personal, I promise, it happens every day (I used to work retail) honestly, don't give it another thought.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 11/01/2023 12:42

I wouldn't think anything of it if I saw it happen to someone else. Like you, I'd be mortified if I did it - we so often judge ourselves far more harshly than others judge us.

The comment from the assistant was unprofessional but like you say, they might have been having a bad day, they are only human.

Yep, I dropped a 6 pack of Coke cans in Waitrose which went everywhere, they absolutely refused to let me pay for it or clean it

cobblers123 · 11/01/2023 12:50

A bottle of Worcester Sauce fell of the conveyor belt when I was putting my shopping on in Lidl. The checkout woman obviously wasn't happy about it and there were quite a few people in the queues, it was so embarrassing, I offered to pay for it but she just said no. Felt awful but it was an accident.

I did drop a 2.5 ltr of paint in B&Q many years ago, all over the floor and my boots. They were lovely, cleaned me up, said don't worry, it was an accident, also wouldn't let me pay. Still embarrassing but didn't feel as bad as I did in Lidl.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 11/01/2023 12:50

I think the shop assistant was rude. It was an accident, don't worry.
I dropped half a dozen eggs on the floor in the supermarket recently. These things happen. .

Wexone · 11/01/2023 13:11

Done worse - ran my trolley into a stand of Mayonnaise - the whole stand collapsed and smashed everywhere. It was mortifying, i did stay and help and clean it up. Shit happens, you didn't do it on purpose, the cashier was wrong to say that.
I was behind a women who dropped a 6 pack of cans while she was in the q she just left it there and walked off, that was wrong, i stayed and called to a staff member and helped clean it up

Workinghardeveryday · 11/01/2023 13:16

I was shopping with dp before Christmas, similar thing happened but yogurt. Wasn’t a huge mess, lid just came off a bit, small amount on floor.

We were treated the same by the staff, my dp was really embarrassed. Was a small Tesco’s.

Take no notice op x

Season0fTheWitch · 11/01/2023 13:44

It's their job to deal with things like that and as you wouldn't be allowed to clean it up (safety issue) and they wouldn't expect you or ask you to pay for it you did nothing wrong. The staff member was rude and unreasonable to be annoyed at you, even if their day was difficult! They'll have already forgotten about it though

Moxysright · 11/01/2023 13:46

Don’t worry about it. Mistakes happen they were probably having a bad day, albeit that’s not your fault. I’d have apologised, offered to help clear it, bought a new one and gone on my way!

Aphrathestorm · 11/01/2023 13:51

I spilt a jar of beetroot at a checkout once.

It went everywhere and stank! It took a team to clean it up.

Was so embarrassed but they were nice and empathetic.

Aftersevens · 11/01/2023 13:59

YANBU to be embarrassed. Anything that draws attention to you, especially negative, can be embarrassing if are the type of person to get embarrassed.
YABU however to be bothered to ask such an obvious question. And I ABU to answer it and then moan about it…..

redpinkyellow · 11/01/2023 14:10

I dropped a large milk carton after paying for it at the M&S self service tills. It exploded everywhere. I was mortified. Had 2 small kids with me. It was really busy and I effectively closed down the self service area. I did help to try and tidy it all up but they were really kind and also told me to get another milk which I refused. I cried my eyes out on the way home!
For weeks afterwards when I went in there I could see specks of dried milk they'd missed in the clean up operation Blush

TheChosenTwo · 11/01/2023 14:14

Oh god it’s mortifying, I’d be embarrassed too, but only because everyone turns and states!!! They won’t give it a second thought.
Whoever made the comment was being rude to verbalise that and for you to hear but I’ve definitely made a snotty comment or two after getting off phone or whatever when I’m at work. Difference is, there’s no one around to hear me!!
you know it was an accident, they know it was an accident. Accidents are planned!

Justcallmebebes · 11/01/2023 14:20

I knocked a display of Prosecco bottles in Tesco the other day and one fell and smashed. The staff couldn't have been nicer but a chap in the queue, pointed at me and said loudly, "she did it". I just apologised and carried on.

To be fair the display was dangerously close to the tills which were very busy

Pearlygates · 11/01/2023 14:24

It was an accident OP, don't take it to heart. The staff we're kinda rude though.

tattygrl · 11/01/2023 14:26

Understandable to feel embarrassed, but you didn't do anything wrong and certainly don't need to feel bad.

I've done an awful lot of retail work in my life (supermarkets as a customer assistant/shelf stacker/code controller), and genuinely, it never bothered me a jot when a customer would drop and smash a bottle, including red wine which makes the aisle look like a murder scene. It's just part of the job and honestly I always appreciated the break from the monotony of my role to go and notify a cleaner, or grab the supplies and do it myself. I spent a lot of time reassuring customers that it wasn't a problem in fact! Also, supermarket staff invariably smash things themselves. It's almost impossible to avoid, being in there all day. Don't sweat it, OP.

Wibbly1008 · 11/01/2023 14:27

Do not think twice , we have all done this. It happens.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 11/01/2023 14:27

I walked in pets at home with my well trained cocker spaniel. He saw the rabbits and did a wee. I was so apologetic but the staff refused to let me clear it up and were lovely about it. The difference was the staff reaction rather than the action.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 11/01/2023 14:33

I’ve worked retail/hospitality since I was 18, you shouldn’t give it another thought. It happens all the time and even if the assistant was having a bad day they shouldn’t have commented the way they did.
The only time I’ve been rude was when a different member of the public stuck her nose in whilst I was cleaning up a coffee spillage of a very embarrassed regular customer and said “you best not make her pay for another one” I replied with “of course I’m not going to bloody well make her pay! Why would you even think that!” I regret being quite so short with her but I was literally on my hands and knees cleaning up milk and she towered over me, plus I get perimenopausal mouth where I sometimes say what I’m actually thinking! Grin

ineedanewbum · 11/01/2023 14:57

Not the point but for the people who have accidentally knocked over a stand of products - I really think supermarkets put these stands in stupid places in the middle of aisles taking up way too much space and make it hard to get past with a full trolley (as they can be awkward to steer). Plus other shoppers to avoid while avoiding these stands. Why do they do this😵‍💫

CitizenofMoronia · 11/01/2023 14:57

Ha, id have gone "Oh? add this to the list" and walked out leaving the shopping on the belt.
