To think it’s almost impossible to have a civil conversation online these days?

I see it on here and elsewhere online all the time people jumping in immediately with rude or unkind responses like they are just waiting for the opportunity to say something mean. I used to quite enjoy chatting online, you might talk to people through message boards that you wouldn’t always agree with but people were basically civil and discussion could be had. Now more often than it people can’t wait to get there claws out and seem to take pleasure in being cruel and mean spirited.

I thought about doing a comedy rude reply. I am sure one will be along soon!

I agree. Even if it's a pretty much 100% YABU there will always be one disruptor

SeasonFinale · 11/01/2023 12:02

sorry I meant YANBU 🤦‍♀️

Coldstate · 11/01/2023 12:11

YANBU. I am in a few Facebook groups and the admins have had to put up warnings that anyone abusing other members, messaging abuse, name calling or harassing members will be banned. The groups are a velvetiser group, an air fryer recipe group, a couple of book groups and a coffee group.

You wouldn’t believe the vitriol that can spill out of grown men over air fryers. Absolutely bonkers.

Ask for deletions
MN delete stuff that people alert them to

GreenTomato67 · 11/01/2023 12:18

Glad it’s just not me although Judging by the poll results some people must enjoy the nastiness. I just think what is the point, conversation should not be a blood sport! I just end up feeling like it’s not good for me and that I should just not bother.

@jtaeapa while the option to report and delete are useful they don’t address the underlying issue I don’t think.

Oh goody here's the daily "everyone's so horrid" thread.
Bingo card at the ready for "to my face" "keyboard warrior" "sad lives" "nasty negative people" etc etc etc

Same for me - a hip replacement group and a cat lovers group of all things!

Not every is horrid but there are clearly a large percentage of people who get off on stirring up shit, making others feel small or just being plain nasty. It doesn’t add anything to the conversation. On the contrary it just derails and shuts conversations down.

Any minute now someone is going to use the phrase 'robust debate'
Translated means, being a knob

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 11/01/2023 12:25

I don't think you are being reasonable OP. If I read a thread where it sounds like nonsense or that someone is being horrible and I feel strongly enough about it I will say what I think. I am never nasty or bitchy but I will say what I think.

I think the bitchiness we see on here is when another poster wades in and slags the other one off etc etc.
We should be able to say what we think or what's the point of a forum eh ?

SleeplessInEngland · 11/01/2023 12:27

By definiton this part of the forum sometimes requires people being given a few home truths, and that can be done in an amusing way that borders on cattiness sometimes. There are degrees, though.

NoNewsIsGoodNews · 11/01/2023 12:29

I am not a fan of tone-policing.

What can feel unnecessary is not taking people’s stories at face value, and assuming instantly that the OP is in the wrong. To the extent of fabricating stuff the OP hasn’t said and making random judgements on their character from the very first post without any real ‘evidence’.
