Teacher by profession, don’t want to return to full class teaching…probably ever..did it from age 23, now have a 4 year old daughter and don’t want to commit to that again.
I have a degree, A levels etc, extensive childcare experience in all areas and teaching experience, including working with children with special needs and EAL students.
Dd is now at school and I need to work again, what can I do within the hours of 9.30 ish to 2.30 (pick up at 3)
Sort of keen to go in a completely different direction, but what?

tutoring home schooled children?

RaininSummer · 11/01/2023 10:25

The civil service sometimes have roles with hours to be negotiated which could work for you. A lot of ex teachers end up there.

Degree subject?

Also - teaching experience in which phases?

We pay an ex-teacher £40/hr for zoom tuition in maths and english. She’s fully booked most days. In our area ex-teacher tutors have long waiting lists. I’d suggest you start tutoring home ed children while working on a longer term plan for career change.

Adult college tuition? Something at a private school eg Registrar, Pastoral support, Research lead, Marketing/ Admissions. Or perhaps civil service.

But if you’re looking for term time jobs I think it’ll need to be connected to the education system in some way.

  • Literally anything self-employed - you could run baby/toddler groups for some kind of activity. This could be massage, crafts, sport, music. You could establish it fully or set up a franchise from a bigger organisation (like Musical Chimps or Rugby Tots etc).
  • You could do tutoring either online or in-person - either tutoring primary school children or tutoring in your A Level/degree subjects.
  • You could work in a shop or hospitality depending on what hours they need you.
  • You could retrain and do a degree with funding for a secondary degree (I think nursing/midwifery etc) and see what the university offer with respect to childcare options. Some placements can facilitate your schedule or provide childcare and some can't.
  • You could find a different role within a school setting if you don't want to teach - TA, dinner lady, pastoral support, reception etc.
  • You could be a delivery driver - UberEats, Deliveroo etc.
  • You could be an emergency nanny (like a supply teacher in people's homes) for when childminder's are ill and the parent needs someone to swoop in.
  • You could work with animals - dog walking, dog grooming, pet sitting.

Some ideas:

LA jobs- early intervention teams, home tuition service, virtual school, behaviour support services, SEN team. Obviously the hours would have be negotiated, but not impossible.
