Data breach from the pharmacy

I collected a prescription for my DD, and upon arrival home, the print out slip is for another person,
Including that persons name, DOB, Address, surgery details and NHS number.

This would mean that DDs tear off slip containing all of the same information has likely made its way into someone else's medication bag.

I think that it needs reporting, as that's quite a lot of information about someone to end up in the wrong persons hands.

DH thinks I need to just accept that it's happened and not say anything.

FWIW, this has made me more concerned because DDs biological father and extended family live in the area, she is not in contact with them, they wouldn't recognise her by sight, but if he had our address I don't believe either of us would be safe so unsure of my anxiety of the worst case scenario is fuelling my feelings toward this.
I do know the probabilities of that information coming into her fathers hands is miniscule, but surely I should raise this with the pharmacist?

Report it

Houseplantmad · 11/01/2023 05:38

Yes you need to speak to the pharmacy as this should not be happening and they need to tighten up their procedures. You must also let them know the implications for you personally as they may not appreciate how serious such a slip up can be.

You do need to tell them as it is an accidental breach of confidentiality. In your case it is a safegarding risk and they need to review their systems.
What if someone gets the wrong drugs and doesn't realise?

autienotnaughty · 11/01/2023 05:38

Report it but tbh my pharmacy still insists you say the address out loud in front of everyone.

NumberTheory · 11/01/2023 05:40

It’s certainly a good idea to tell them so that they are aware they are making mistakes as they can make a point of imploring staff to be more careful. Just being aware will lessen the chances of it happening again. And if others have also reported similar it gives them a chance to check and see if they have a systemic issue or if there is a particular person who needs retraining.

Whether its worth reporting to someone outside fo the pharmacy, I don’t know. I probably wouldn’t bother unless it happened to me again.

This happened to me. My husband was given someone else’s private prescription instead of mine when the medicine was not available. I contacted the lady so that she could take it to another pharmacy. I could see the pharmacy were under pressure and didn’t want anyone to get into trouble, however when I had to explain what had happened, the pharmacist said it had to be reported.

Namechangefail1234 · 11/01/2023 05:51

Thank you all, I thought that was the best course of action, but DH has just been saying not to cause problems
Tbh, the drug mix up scenario someone mentioned up thread has happened to me previously with them. They tried to give me a second course of highly controlled medication that I knew was a prescribe only once type of deal from my GP. Maybe that shows they have some sort of flaw in their system- but they are a big chain so maybe it's more individual than company process flaw related

It's quite concerning how much information they've given away.

I would report it to them too; you can also report to the information commissioner

Yes, I thought they all did - ours do here. If they had done that then the mistake would have been spotted. Maybe ask why they didn’t ask?

SavoirFlair · 11/01/2023 05:59

why not just speak to the pharmacist about your concerns? That’s where the problem lies
