Monthly electric and gas cost for a couple living in a small apartment?

Hi All,

Posted on AIBU for traffic.

So, my partner and I are about to move out (lived with family previously and until now) and I feel a bit anxious about moving out with the current climate in regards to how expensive things are.

What should I expect in regards to electric and gas bills for a small apartment with just the two of us there as an estimate?

Thanks in advance xx

We live in a two bed flat. We have a combi boiler that runs the hot water and central heating.

Before the energy crisis we were paying £58 a month for gas and electricty. Now with the new prices our Direct Debit is £109 per month for gas and electricity. I am not sure if it enough to cover winter. We'll see.

To add, we have double glazing but it is a thirties flat with solid walls, so we do need to ensure it is heated adequately to avoid damp and condensation.

@Ginmonkeyagain thank you. What would you say your usage is like? Do you put the heating on daily? Any appliances such as a tumble dryer? Thanks

Mine is £120 a month for gas and electric. We are home all day and have heating on for 5 hours a day and use the tumble dryer 3 times a week.

Generally - two showers a day, washing machine twice a week we cook most days.

We don't have a tumble drier as we have outside drying space. In wet weather we use a dehumidifier in the spare room.

In terms of heating we heat to 18 degrees. Normally this time of year we have the heating on for 2 hours in the morning and another 2 hours in thr evening. We never have it on over night.

How long do the clothes take to dry? @Ginmonkeyagain we use a tumble dryer at the moment but I worry it'll really impact the bills. But we have no other option as my partner's room is in the attic/loft and there's no drying space

We have an EBAC dehumidifier with a laundry setting. If the heating is on clothes take about a day to dry (NB do not hang wet washing on hot radiators, you will get damp and moild problems).

We put clothes outside a lot, even if it is cold a few hours outside can make a difference. In summer stuff dries really quickly on our balcony.

To be honest, if you have no outside drying space at all I would get a tumble drier. Having clothes hanging up drying in a small apartment all the time is just depressing.
