To complain about company HR?

So I don't know if I need to give my head a wobble or if this is really not on.

I'm retuning from mat leave in a month, I have agreed to a reduction in my work hours with my line manager working approx 80%. I had hoped to work a set three days, then alternate Saturdays and Sundays (works better for my mum and MIL who will be looking after DD). But the company's week starts on a Sunday so some weeks I would work more hours than others, but averaging at the 80%. So I called HR to ask, the person said to email a specific team so I emailed asking will this be OK, knowing that my manager wouldn't know the answer anyway. I also asked what would happen to overtime hours, if and when they arise (company and manager have form for expecting unpaid overtime and the only time I have been paid overtime is when I worked a 70+ hour week and I told them I was pregnant, so another teams manager actually went and spoke to my area manager to get me overtime paid).
Instead of replying to me, they have spoken to my area manager who has spoken to my line manager, who has spoken to me. That's fine, but I've not had an answer to my overtime question, and AIBU to expect HR to at least acknowledge my email and say we'll have to talk to otbers about this is this ok?

If you just want to complain on here, no, YANBU. If, instead of calling or emailing again and pointing out they missed a bit, you want to put in a formal complaint, then yes, YABU.

Perfectly reasonable to follow up with them saying you haven't had an answer. It surely doesn't need to be a complaint at this stage?

Believ · 10/01/2023 05:32

Do you mean you want to put a complaint in about them? If so, yes you are being completely unreasonable.

Whatmarbles · 10/01/2023 05:40

The only person who knows how what hours you work will impact the business is your line manager.
It is perfectly correct that HR will need to speak to them to see if it is acceptable.
I would have sorted my hours with line manager and then emailed HR as a fait accomplis, not negotiated with HR who wouldn't gave a clue what days would be best for you.

I'm really not sure what you are planning on complaining about and to whom.

So HR have told him it's not possible, he was happy to do it. I had already agreed this with my line manager. I emailed HR as I anticipated a potential issue with the hours being split into different weeks. It's a contract issue, I have to work the same number of hours each week, which is fine!

Yes sorry that's what I mean, email and ask why I haven't heard back from them!

Yes sorry I don't mean a formal complaint, just an email or phone call asking why no reply

No no not a formal complaint I think I've phrased my title wrong 😅

So are you just asking if your unreasonable to chase up an unaswered email?

NumberTheory · 10/01/2023 12:09

Emailing them is a good idea. It’s easy for things to get missed. Follow up is the way to handle it.

I didn't know if would come across as a bit passive aggressive, given that I have already had my answer (to part of the question).

What has your line manager said ? If they've answered about the days but not the overtime just do a follow up email re overtime.
