To not take DS to A&E

IAmADancer · 09/01/2023 13:09

asking for your thoughts.

DS has dropped a 2kg dumbbell on his foot. He thought he would ‘try and see if he could lift it’

I have iced it, raised it and tried to get swelling down. He originally said it didn’t hurt but he’s now saying it’s painful to touch and he is walking in a funny way. DH said to take him to A&E, I feel this isn’t best course of action. GP won’t do anything.

I have attached a picture, am I being a bad mother not taking him to A&E? It is swollen but I think they’ll just say to ice it and give painkillers

Glad he's okay. Definitely the right thing to get it checked out.

lljkk · 11/01/2023 21:23

Thanks for update. Hope he feels much better, soon.

PumpkinDart · 11/01/2023 21:24

@IAmADancer I'm glad it's not broken and hopefully he's on the mend!

GFP · 11/01/2023 21:26

Late to the thread but think you did the right thing OP. That looks nasty enough to have well been a fracture.

🤞 for a quick recovery.

GlassBunion · 11/01/2023 21:28

Glad to hear. Hope he recovers soon.

IAmADancer · 11/01/2023 21:31

Thanks everyone, appreciate the checking back with me

Yes to seeking medical attention. Late to the party but wondering why DH didn't do the trip to A&E if he felt that way?

KittyMcKitty · 11/01/2023 22:20

I had an impact injury in a similar place - similar looking bruising (mine was probably worse) - anyway carried on as normal for several days, pain got worse and worse. Eventually went to minor injuries and had broken 5th metatarsal. Was lucky mine mended well (was a clean break - you could see a lot of space in the x Ray) - the longer you leave it the more problems with it healing.

Logicalreasoning · 11/01/2023 22:23

Defo take him... dd did this 6 years ago, it was bruised like this but she could still walk but with a slight limp, finally after a week we took her to A&e turns out she’d broken a bone in her foot that is apparently highly difficult to break. She was in a cast for 4 weeks.

Youdoyoubabe · 11/01/2023 22:35

Even if it is broken they won't set a broken toe. Broken toes are very painful though, not initially but the pain does build.

You could tape it to a splint to keep it straight. I have done that with suspected broken toes before. Never gone to A&E for that. It looks painful but minor.

Perhaps a walk in or minor injury unit?

GP can refer for an xray also instead of waiting in A&E for one.

For anyone reading this thread this is bad/wrong advice.
Yes a Gp can refer for an X-ray, but it’s something that they can do for say in a weeks time, not same day. And the results might take a few weeks to get back. If you went to a GP with this injury they would just advise you that they can’t xray in the practice and you need to go to minor injuries unit or A&E where they will se enough in minors,

Mamanyt · 11/01/2023 23:54

I'm glad that's all it was. I had an injury that I was certain was not a break, because I could walk on the foot, although VERY carefully. Two years down the line, I had the foot x-rayed for another injury, and they asked me who set the previous break, that it was not done properly, and I'd most likely have arthritis in that food later on. LOL, thirty years down the line, and sure enough, I have arthritis in that foot. Shoulda had the x-ray done. Better safe than sorry!

@Intrepidescape wow, that’s quite the post. Well done you.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Hospital and staff were fantastic and it wasn’t broken. He’d just given it a nasty whack causing it to swell very quickly and look like a possible fracture. It ended up being a soft tissue injury. They said no games for the week so he’s very pleased at no hockey, rugby or swimming this week!

We'll, thank God you went to a and e, that definitely couldn't have waited for someone to answer a 111 call for advice. Phew.

Mummymoomingrumpy · 12/01/2023 05:13

The bruising is similar to when I broke a finger. The sun wasn’t immediate with that either.
When my daughter thought she had broken her arm I took her to A ad E, and after a long wait, the doctor who saw her said that even if something looks very broken there is no rush and it is fine to go to the GP and be referred for X-ray.

Intrepidescape · 12/01/2023 05:23

@Mummymoomingrumpy - that’s a broken finger - not a broken wrist and if it is broken it is absolutely something that should be dealt with immediately because of the pain and the potential the swelling or the way it could potentially set could cause you to to nerve damage and lose feeling!
My family member had a broken finger and he was referred to a surgeon. Another family member had a broken finger and it was merely strapped to the finger next to it - but in both cases they went to the ER.

Why are NHS doctors so incompetent?!!

Mummymoomingrumpy · 12/01/2023 05:42

The doctor was referring to the broken arm not finger and I am only relaying what he said.

The finger was pretty painful too!

Hopeistaysane · 12/01/2023 06:18

@IAmADancer glad you got it seen and it’s nothing serious, always best to check.

Can he wiggle his toes? If he can it ain't broken and if he can't hospital it is but again would use walk in or NHS24

Why not read the OP's update before posting?

Cleopatrr · 12/01/2023 16:11

Late to thread, but glad to see you went to A&E and it wasn’t broken.

just for reference, my partner is a paramedic of 32 years. His response was ‘if it’s had something heavy dropped on it it needs to be Xrayed. - A&E or minor injuries, but preferably not via ambulance if you can possibly get there any other way. ‘

NoDairyNoProblem · 12/01/2023 16:15

Great news.

Solonge · 12/01/2023 16:55

A&E departments country wide have said please don’t come to the dept unless you have a life threatening condition, which is why OP is not keen to go. If you have a minor injuries unit attached to any nearby hospitals then go there, otherwise ring 111 or ring GP for advice….(if yours actually answers a phone, ever!).

Issue with this is it does nothing to deter the entitled people who turn up with a cough they had for over a month because they finally decided to ring a GP that morning and they had no appointments for a week. Unfortunately it's deterring normal people who really need to go because they don't want to be a bother or assume it isn't as bad as it is.

This isnt always the case. My ds broke his toe and had an operation to reset it. 3 weeks in a cast then 6 weeks in a walking boot.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 02/06/2023 22:21

I’ve got a big toe that won’t bend due to a lad in my class at school pulling his chair back and sitting down hard. He didn’t realise my foot was under the chair leg. No one thought it was broken but it was and never healed properly.
Glad you’re taking him to A&E.
