to leave my job

Joined my current position on a fixed term 6 month contract. Passed my 3 month probation and now they want to extend my fixed contract for another 6 months instead of offering me a permanent position (which was said in my interview as i said i needed security with having young children, finances etc).

Now my work place is constantly hiring people for the same job as me in different areas (admin) so it's not like they are short of money (HUGE company). I have done a hell of lot since I started and mostly had to train myself.

AIBU to feel this a huge slap in the face?

I honestly feel like rejecting their offer and leaving the business.

Have you asked them whether the role will be permanent in future? Apply for one of their other admin roles if there’s lots of them

Plant2628 · 09/01/2023 11:06

Are you able to approach and ask for a permanent contract and question politely if not - why not? Can you say whilst you'd really like to stay on you need a permanent contract. You don't want to have explore alternatives and can they give that consideration?

hoppityscotch · 09/01/2023 11:06

Why haven't you applied for one of the admin jobs I'm a different area? You're taking it a bit personally- is there something else going on? Different areas will have different budgets and headcount plans etc.

Depends if other ads are permanent?

Curiosity101 · 09/01/2023 11:11

Have you queried why they have offered you and extension rather than a permanent position?

If so, what did they say?

If it's a huge company then it's potentially very easy for things to get overlooked or for people to get tied up by process/bureaucracy.

If they are hiring lots of permanent staff then I agree with a PP. If they give an unsatisfactory answer to the question around why you've not been offered a permanent role, then just reiterate your reasons for needing one and if there's an alternate role available, let them know you intend to apply for that (assuming your contract allows).

The other jobs are also fixed but it’s a hit and miss because some get made permanent age 6 months, others get extended.. like mine. So it’s hard not to take it personally. Especially when everyone around me including managers tell me I do a good job 🙄

I would assume that it's due to the future of the department you're in. If they're not sure they're going to need someone long term then they'll keep you on contract.

Other departments will be independent to that and have independent budgets/needs.

Mumma · 09/01/2023 11:56

You accepted a fixed term job. If you are that set on permanent then apply for permanent jobs.

My last job was fixed term extended and took 2 years to be made permanent due to HR and funding streams. It is what it is.

hoppityscotch · 09/01/2023 12:00

You're just going to have to be honest with them I think and ask and say you want to look at the other roles and permanent opportunities.

JudgeRudy · 09/01/2023 12:17

Sounds like the uncertainty is around your specific role rather than you personally. Maybe seek clarity around this.
If I had a 6 month contract I wouldn't necessarily be expecting to be offered anything at 3 months. When's your next review. Could an offer be made then? Again, rather than guessing ask.
